Campaigners fighting to save children's heart services at Glenfield Hospital may have to wait at least another fortnight before hearing if an appeal for a review has been successful.

An initial assessment by the Independent Reconfiguration Panel is being considered by new Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt.

It will advise on whether a full review into the decision to transfer children's heart surgery from Leicester to Birmingham should be carried out.

Mr Hunt ordered an initial review of the decision following a request from city and county councillors.

“Glenfield seems to be the only hospital in the country that has a great reputation internationally for both ECMO and children's heart surgery. So why are they attempting to close these services down at Glenfield?

It does not make sense, unless there are other hidden political reasons to close them down. Why should half the UK's provision of children's heart surgery be confined to the prosperous Con voting area south of Watford? Why should East Anglia, the Midlands and North, plus Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland share just four centres between them?”
