High-flying Knitters make it 13 games undefeated
Hinckley United continued their excellent home form with a 4-1 win over second-placed Southport last night in Blue Square North.
The victory saw the Knitters extend their unbeaten sequence at the Greene King Stadium to 13 games.
It was an entertaining encounter in which Southport fully played their part but, in the end, Hinckley’s clinical finishing earned them the points.
United took control with two goals in a 90 second spell midway through the first half.
Defender Lee Collins grabbed the first, driving a loose ball into the roof of the net after the Southport defence failed to clear Andy Hall’s free-kick into their box.
The visitors almost levelled straight from the re-start when Chris Simm planted a free header straight at Chris MacKenzie from close range before Hinckley doubled their lead almost immediately, Chukki Eribenne’s cross converted from close range by Dan Dillon.
Southport responded well after the interval, putting the home side under pressure and getting their reward on the hour when Steve Daly lashed home his effort from the left-hand corner of the area.
But any hopes of a comeback were dashed midway through the half when Eribenne’s strength saw him evade a tackle on the right flank before delivering a precise cross that Andy Gooding headed home from close range.
The scoring was completed after 72 minutes, Hall’s trickery took him into the box where he was fouled by Matty McGinn who was sent off and Eribenne capped a fine display by converting the penalty.
