Leicester Mercury

I almost fell off my chair when I read in the Mercury ("Green drive by council", January 5) that Blaby District Council had become the first district authority in the county to sign up to the Climate Local agreement.

By signing up, the council is committing itself to, among other things, reducing energy use, reducing flood risk and attracting green industries to the area.

According to the Local Government Association website, another aim of any council signing up to this charter is to "protect the natural environment".

How does this tally with the council's decision to allow the building of thousands of houses on green fields, especially the blighting of a huge area around Leicester Forest East and Enderby?

This will lead to more vehicles and more pollution in an area I believe is already breaching EU regulations.

What about the consequent destruction of large swathes of the natural environment the council has just proudly signed up to protect? You could not make it up.

Bob Pfeiffer, Broughton Astley.

“Sorry to appear to be the odd one out here and I understand the concern shown by others but I live in a house that was a green field thirty years ago.....we all live in property that was a green field at some point in history. I know that this will be a massive project and that there are concerns about pollution and traffic but where are we to build these houses if not on green sites? Building on brown-field sites is fine but these are generally in the town centre and not everyone wants to live in an apartment in an old hosiery factory in the city no matter how good the conversion. Is it possible to build these houses on a number of sites within the B.D.C. area instead of one? I don't know. Wherever new houses are required green-field sites will be lost simply because there is nowhere else to go. Now before you decide to 'red arrow' me think about where YOU would build a new development.”

“Spot on Bob, it's the usual case of ' do as I say not as I do ' syndrome from Blaby.”
