Firefighters rescued a horse stuck in the canal in Market Harborough this morning.

Crews were called to a stretch of the Grand Union canal behind the Woodlands layby on Leicester Road just before 8am.

The alarm was raised by a member of the public who noticed the animal in difficulty.

A specialist rescue crew from the Southern station in Leicester assisted Harborough firefighters to release the animal.

A fire service spokesperson said: "The horse was half in and half out of canal. It looked as if it had gone for a drink and slipped in."

She added that the crews used ropes to guide the animal out which was then handed over to its owner unharmed.
