Hospitals in Leicester are planning to take on extra staff to cope with the number of obese patients having weight-loss surgery.

It comes as the number of patients going under the knife in a last-ditch effort to lose weight has tripled in three years.

An extra doctor has already been taken on and there are plans to expand the service by recruiting more surgeons.

Between March this year and April 2010, the NHS in Leicestershire will have spent £600,000 on weight-loss surgery for 72 patients from the city and county.

GPs in Leicestershire are also spending nearly £1m a year on diet pills for overweight patients.

In April, new rules were brought in by hospitals meaning people have to be heavier than ever to qualify for surgery.

Only people who are super obese – with a body mass index (BMI) of 50 or more – are considered for operations. Previously anyone classed as "morbidly obese" with a BMI reading of 40 or more could have the surgery if they were recommended for it.

A normal BMI reading is between 18.5 and 24.9.

BMI is the measurement that compares a person's weight and height to determine their overall fitness.

Without the change, surgeons believe they would be swamped with patients.

Sukhbir Ubhi, a consultant surgeon, has been carrying out weight-loss operations at Leicester Royal Infirmary for 10 years.

He said: "People are getting heavier and there is also much more awareness about weight-loss surgery and its potential benefits.

"The surgery isn't suitable for all patients.

"They have to have a fairly intense assessment before the operation and afterwards they have to make significant changes to their lifestyles."

Mr Ubhi added: "If the rules on who qualifies for this NHS surgery had not been changed I think we would be inundated."

Gastric banding or bypass surgery is only available on the NHS to patients who show a long-term commitment to carry on eating less and taking regular exercise.

Kath Beardow, from Oadby, was so overweight she was warned she might not survive a gastric bypass operation in 2006.

Crippled with arthritis in both hips and knees due to a lifetime of being overweight, she knew she had no other way of cutting her weight from 24 stone.

She said: "I was a fat baby, a fat child and I grew into a fat adult.

"At one point, I was 30 stone and had tried every slimming club, diet and pills but couldn't get my weight down.

"Nothing made any difference and I knew an operation was the only thing that would help me."

The former radiographer, who also underwent a tummy tuck operation to get rid of excess skin, now weighs around 13 stone.

She said: "Without the operation, I would probably have been dead from a heart attack or stroke within 18 months."

“How very sad, I was researching bypass surgery and came across this article and these comments, are people really that cruel and judgemental. I have a BMI of about 45 and diabetes so am being considered for the op as a LAST resort after trying loads of different things. I managed to lose about 4 stone but then came to a standstill. I didn't become overweight overnight, there were loads of different factors and I take responsibility for them. I am 37, well educated with a great job and have always had a job since leaving school. My sickness record is excellent, probably 2 days of per year due to the flu. Somedays I really struggle but still mange to make it to work. I don't drink or smoke and have a job that really helps society, am I really that bad? I think not!!! I worry about the negative impact some comments may have on people who may already not be in a good place, well reasoned debate is good is good but pure evil cruel comments are not.”

“Mr LFE .......... how racist you are!!! Not all obese people eat the wrong types of foods nor sit down all day stuffing their faces.
It is down to society that many people are obese. Poor incomes lead to cheap dinners that are not healthy. It is people like you Mr LFE that make people so angry. We can not all be thin and 'normal'!!!
Weight loss surgery is the last resort for many people and although I dont think the NHS should pay for it all, look at all the help smokers get!!!! people smoke through choice but they get so much help and more understanding than obese people. Society is very cruel and obese people are now paying the price for such racist comments. You should NEVER judge a book by its cover...........”

“No sane person has weight loss surgery. It is societies pressures that obese people resort to surgery. It is people nasty comments and prejudice that make people resort to surgery. Surgery is not handed on a plate, a rigours assessment which can go on for over 2 years is undertaken. People in glass houses should not throw stones, Yummy Mummy if you were to suffer an injury and not be able to go to the gym you would soon learn how it is to feel not being able to exercise and with each 1lb gained feel more helpless. Most obese patients have paid for surgery and go onto pay for the excess skin to be removed. Get rid of the fast food outlets which came from america and get back to good old home cooking. Some of your narrow minded comments are truly appauling and I feel ashamed of leicester folk.”

“Mr. Kelly - Please don't let the name Yummy Mummy put you in the mind frame of me not having a job. I may be a mother but I have a nice balance between working life, spending time with my daughter and going to the gym - not to say this is my whole life!

Since leaving full time education I have never been unemployed. If you would like more information please contact me at: betterjob@earnmorethanu.co.uk for a CV.”

“Why are you all complaining about public funds being wasted on extra staff at a hospital? The real issues such as scroungers that sponge off the state is not even mentioned. Fat people may be fat but at least they pay their taxes unlike most of the people who have posted comments on this article. I suggest you find a job, pay your taxes, get that feeling of being cheated by your own country and then complain about public funds. Imagine there was no more job seekers allowance, income support, housing benefit, council tax benefit, child benefit, etc, etc, most of you would be on the street begging or stealing.”

“Boris - should we start putting posters of obese people in the windows of all takeaways in warning to mirror the fag packets which now all have pictures of lungs etc on??

Perhaps not a bad idea. We could put pictures of slim people on vegetables so that the people who need the education to realise that if they constantly feed their bodies and do no exercise will realise that if they eat too much of one and none of the other they will get fat!”

“I believe these people should never allow themselves to get in such a state. Fair dues if the condition is medical and it cannot be helped but for people get so fat for the sake of not exercising/eat properly is very wrong. People will moan about not being able to afford going to the gym blah blah blah. It doesn't cost anything to go walking/jogging in the area.

Now that i have had my rant, its back to the point of this article. If people do get so large that they have to have this op then as much as i hate to say it, "so be it". There are so many large people around that they are almost turning into eye sores like the LM building. I was on holiday to Turkey the other week and the number of fat women that were there in skimpy bikinis was horrible!!!! Unfortunately for us, most were English!!!”
