A petition signed by more than 200 people who oppose the closure of their library has been submitted to the council.

Leicester City Council wants to shut Aylestone library, in Richmond Road, and move books to the leisure centre in Knighton Lane East, where there would be a self-service facility.

The plan is part of a council overhaul of library services.

The petition was started by Aylestone library user Ann Sturgess, 76, and was kept in L&S News in Cavendish Road.

It was signed by about 210 people and was handed to ward councillor Nigel Porter to mark the end of the public consultation.

He said: "The residents and I are really happy with the response.

"A consultation is about listening to the views of people, so hopefully the council will listen to the concerns of more than 200."

The council said the overhaul, which also includes scrapping transport for the disabled to libraries and reducing opening hours, would save £1.24 million over four years.
