Hunt rides out for start of its season
More than 130 riders saddled up for a hunt's first meeting of the season yesterday.
The Quorn, which met at its kennels in Kirby Bellars, went trail hunting near Thorpe Satchville and Twyford.
A crowd of followers gathered at the kennels to watch the riders, who set off an hour later than the traditional 11am start because of dry ground conditions.
Peter Morritt, the hunt's honorary secretary, said: "It was great to get such a lot of support at the opening meet.
"It was very much a community thing, with a lot of followers on foot enjoying a great spectacle.
"We also had a lot of younger people out riding, which is very encouraging.
"The hunt is still very much part of the community. There is an awful lot of support locally."

“Opinion8ed. I appreciate your agreement with my 'hunting argument'. I also accept that there are many reasons for the current economic slump, an almost world wide phenomenon. However, what I cannot accept, is that it is purely coincidental that we saw in Margaret Thatcher's government a rise in unemployment figures to a level of more than 3.5 million. David Cameron, in the last Tory Manifesto, openly stated that he aspired to build upon what Margaret Thatcher had begun.
She was responsible for the privatisation of the utilities, gas, electricity, water, and telephone services. She started the transition of this country becoming one providing a service industry in place of what we had been, a country manufacturing first class goods, on which we were proud to attach the label 'Made in Britain'. Sadly Tony Blair, with his foolish "New Labour", just continued along the path Thatcher had prepared, (he was/is simply a Tory in disguise though) so couldn't be trusted to steer clear of capitalism.
David Cameron is more concerned with achieving his own personal ideologies, more than having a genuine interest in the welfare of everyone. His interests lie in getting the best of everything for those who already have; he'll let others fall by the wayside, and won't blink an eyelid. 3.5 million unemployed, he'll beat that figure easily, just give him that little more free rein !”

“Aren't we Brits great....we'll go to any lengths to ban our own cultural activities whilst throwing huge amounts of taxpayers money at foreign ones.”

“@reubedeube. Quite agree re the hunting 'argument', the threat of killing their dogs and horses if hunting was outlawed was just blackmail. Not entirely sure all the blame for joblessness deserves to be laid at the door of the coalition however. There are many reasons for the current slump.”

“I wonder from where they are getting all of the horses on which they ride, the necessary tack, and enough hounds to hunt with ? We were told hundreds of hounds would have to be 'put down'. lots of tack suppliers would go out of business and lots of 'country people' would be deprived of earning their living and 'following their way of life' , if the Bill to control hunting with hounds became law.
They couldn't possibly survive if all they could do was to lay false trails. We never have seen any evidence of all the very negative outcomes that were forecast !
Hundreds of thousands of people have lost their jobs and their 'way of life', however, due to the
idiotic behaviour of the present coalition government.”

“I suppose, martin_le3, that like everyone else they are entitled to four weeks annual leave. If they choose to spend some of it like this, that is up to them.”
