David Hankey said that the Hunting Act is a "bad law" and should be repealed (Mailbox, November 13).

I presume his comments were not made because the Act was a poorly drafted law but because of his desire to see the return of legalised hunting. A "bad law" could and should be tightened up.

There are many bad laws. The laws against speeding and using a mobile phone while driving are "bad laws". I see both offences committed every time I make a journey and I doubt if many of the culprits are caught. Does Mr. Hankey suggest that these laws should be repealed because they are difficult to enforce by "a police force who are already over-stretched"?

After 80 years of anti-hunt campaigning, Parliament decided that hunting was unnecessary, barbaric and cruel and the Hunting Act was passed in February 2005.

There will never be a compromise between pro-hunt and anti-hunt campaigners.

Enough time and money has been spent on the hunting law and it is time Mr Hankey and others like him accepted it and moved on.

Elizabeth Allison, Aylestone.

“This letter makes a good point - one of the standard arguments that the pro-hunting minority make is that too much parliamentary time was wasted on banning it. So what's their solution? Spend more parliamentary time repealing the act.”
