Iconic Donington bridge is removed
One of the most iconic structures in motor-racing is being taken down as part of a £100 million revamp of Donington Park race track.
The Dunlop bridge is being removed, but could be given a new spot at the track in the run-up to the Formula One British Grand Prix in 2010.
However, planning permission must be granted before that can happen, and a suitable alternative site has yet to be found.
Yesterday, workers started dismantling the famous arch.
It has to be removed to make way for a 200mph straight on the grand prix circuit now being created.
The bridge, which has been a feature of the 2.5-mile track since May 1977, took spectators to the inner section of the circuit.
A simulation of the new track
"As a motorsport enthusiast, I am sorry to see the Dunlop bridge coming down," said circuit owner Simon Gillett.
"It is an iconic structure that has become an integral part of Donington Park.
"I will do everything in my power to ensure we are able to re-site the bridge within the circuit.
"However, this work signals the rapid progression we continue to make with our redevelopment programme.
"It is a further demonstration of our commitment to delivering on this project."
Bridges have been an intrinsic part of the circuit for much of its history. A stone bridge with a central arch under which cars raced in the 1930s still stands beside the track.
Dunlop UK spokesman James Bailey said: "Our relationship with Donington is as strong as ever.
"Dunlop is continuing to support both the Great and British Motorsport Festival in July and the British Touring Car Championship round in May. We still have Dunlop bridges at other circuits around the world, including the famous Le Mans bridge, and we hope to work with Donington to preserve this iconic piece of motorsport history."
On Wednesday, a 3D simulator showing what the track will look like in 2010 was unveiled.
The simulator – which will soon be open to the public – shows off the pit and paddock complex, clubhouse, access tunnels and a half-mile infield lap.
