A pensioner has died in hospital nearly a month after he was hit by a car.

John Gilbert West, of Knighton, Leicester, was injured after being involved in a collision with a vehicle while walking in Frederick Street, Wigston, last month.

The 86-year-old, known as Jack, was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary following the crash on December 3. He died on January 2.

Neighbour Paul Thompson said: "He was a bit of a character and a popular man around here. We would see him around quite a bit.

"I visited him in hospital several times and he seemed to be in good spirits.

"He had an allotment around the corner which he would go to everyday. He always enjoyed talking about his time in India during the war.

"It is very sad that he has died."

The crash happened at 2.20pm at the junction with Leicester Road, and involved Mr West and a silver Toyota Corolla.
