Leicestershire's decision to play two spinners at the Brit Oval against Surrey proved to be the perfect one.

However, nobody in the County camp could have predicted how much Claude Henderson and Jigar Naik would dominate proceedings as County powered to victory by an innings and 60 runs yesterday with a day to spare in their Championship clash.

Henderson was the pick of the first-innings bowlers but it was Naik, with career-best figures of 7-96, who nailed County's third victory of the season, and their first over Surrey since 1998.

"It's a good feeling," said 25-year-old Naik. "It's unbelievable really."

He added: "The pitch was really good for me. When I first saw it when we got here, I thought I might have the chance to play. It had a bit of pace and bounce. So it was good to get the opportunity."

Naik was without doubt the match-winner but he was full of praise for all the bowlers used by skipper Matthew Hoggard.

The seamers bowled tightly, allowing Naik and Henderson to run through the opposition inside three days.

"All the lads bowled well," said Naik. "They built up the pressure and we were always able to stay one step ahead." Naik was also thrilled for his slow-bowling partner Claude Henderson, whose first-innings haul of 6-84 was the second time he has snapped up half-a-dozen wickets this season.

"Claude was awesome," said Naik. "He has been tutoring me for the last three years and I can't speak highly enough of him. It is a real honour to have him around."

It is not just Henderson, though, who is passing on his influence because a good blend is developing in the Leicestershire dressing room.

Naik said: "We've got guys like Claude, Matthew Hoggard and Paul Nixon. They are all full of chat but, having them around, means that my development has come on twice as quickly as it would have done."

Senior coach Tim Boon was naturally thrilled with the result.

"I think we have progressed from the Middlesex game last week," he said. "The main thing is for us to focus on playing good cricket. This match has also shown the importance of scoring runs in the first innings. That gives you something to bowl at.

"But it has been a good game all round for Leicestershire cricket. I think our supporters can be proud of the players."

“Well Done Lads; So Proud Of You!!! The only time i've felt this happy supporting our club is when we had that restored hope against them in the T20 final when we won! Let's hope this springboards us again like then...”

“Brilliant performance from the lads at the Oval. Jigar deserved his chance and had a great game as did Henderson, New, Jefferson and DuToit and everybody else. Come on you Foxes!”
