A nursery has won the right to deliver a Christmas tree to 10 Downing Street next month.

Richard and Gail Underwood, from Oakberry Trees, in Dunton Bassett, were runner-up in the Champion Christmas Tree Grower category at the 14th Annual British Christmas Tree Growers Association competition at Berkshire College of Agriculture, in Maidenhead.

They now have the honour of presenting a Christmas tree to stand in Downing Street's Pillared Room, which is used when international agreements are being signed and as the main staging area for receptions.

Richard said: "We're delighted to know one of our own trees will have pride of place inside such a beautiful room at one of the country's most famous residences."

The competition was divided into five categories: pine, fir, spruce, container growth and wreaths.

Each finalist could submit two of any one species per category and all trees entered were between 1.8m and 2.2m high. The judges scored the trees on their foliage, colour, shape and marketability.
