A lap-dancing club has appealed against a refusal of a licence to allow it to continue trading.

Angels, in Braunstone Gate, West End, Leicester, faces having to close or cease its shows by the end of March, unless it can overturn the decision by Leicester City Council.

Under a new scheme, all sex entertainment venues in the city need to be licensed, but in hearings before Christmas, Angels' application was rejected by councillors.

They said they were concerned the application was being made on behalf of a third party for someone they would not grant a licence to.

Councillors also said the club was not in an appropriate location given that a sports centre is being built by De Montfort University, in nearby Dun's Lane.

The council's head of licensing, Mike Broster, said Angels had appealed on both grounds and the case was due to be heard by magistrates at a date yet to be set.

He said: "The first grounds – the third party – application is something that can be appealed but the second, under existing legislation, is not.

"There is a lot of case law from other parts of the country where councils have deemed an area no longer appropriate for a sex entertainment venue."

No appeals have yet been submitted for Panache, in Yeoman Street, and Baby Blue, in New Bond Street, which were also refused licences.

The council has set a limit of three lap-dancing clubs in the city and has granted licences to Platinum Lace, in Abbey Street, and Spearmint Rhino, in Belgrave Gate. Nobody from Angels was available to comment.

    “@ PlanetJane,

If people (not just the male of the species, i have seen females coming out of the one opp Fan Club in the city) choose to attend a lap dancing bar then it is their choice!!!

And it is hardly fair to link a lap dancing bar to kerb crawling is it? to make such an sweeping statement could be expensive on your behalf if the Angels managment take that the wrong way.

I have been to lap dancing bars in the past on stag nights (it's what you do lol) and if the dancers are being exploited then they should be acctress' as they are having a ball and drive very nice cars from their income from this job choice, many only work that job as they have no other reason to work due to the income then get.

If it does not affect you then what is the harm they are adults after all being a adult club, what next? you will be banning any period dramas on the BBC that dare show a breast after the 9PM water shed.

You can join up with Mary Whitehouse @ http://tinyurl.com/8abe97p the "sex industry" street level was probably more frequnted than nowadays.”

“I think that the only blokes who complain about places like this haven't got the bottle to go in them, as far as the wives/ partners are concerned, they might see some 'fringe' benefit if they encouraged their Husbands to go to them, I can't imagine there will be any replies to this one, I'll put my bullet proof vest on now x x”

“Strange isnt it. We cant have a private club is a side street, well away from the city centre, where entry is strictly policed by door staff, but we can have a certain shop in Humberstone Gate that displays its wares in the front window where anyone can walk in and see items of a sexual and titillating nature.

This country and those supposedly in authority certainly have some misguided opinions on sex and morality, and as an open-minded individual, I resent being dictated to by a bunch of over-bearing councillors hell bent on a morality crusade.”

If it's against English culture or reminds you of imperialist past achievements, then you want it destroyed (re: Bowstring Bridge).

If it's labour P.C correct, and they tell you it's good, you believe them 100%. Anything else, it's evil Tory lies.END OF QUOTE

How you got this from my desire not to save the Bowstring Bridge I have no idea! I love England and have a bookshelf full of English history and culture to prove it. My love of English culture, however stretches far from your narrowly defined one as I hope my avatar shows.”

“QUOTE With your logic we should demolish The Clock Tower and The Guild Hall END OF QUOTE

Now you're just being silly. The three things are not comparable and I haven't compared them. However let's be equally silly...by your logic we would never knock anything down and we'd still be living in houses without central heating and inside lavs and forever trying to find a plug socket.

Going swimming always costs money - unless you know of a free swimming pool somewhere?”

“I would have thoght the Council would have wanted the licence fee as they are so hard up. Why not open their own club? Use the De Montfort Hall , .,it many make a profit- some hope.”

“@leicsguy - how can you say any male who says they havent been to a lapdancing club is lying?? I personally dont know anyone within my circle of friends who HAS been to one, and not one of them would lie and deny it if they had.

Rather than pay to see a starnger dance erotically, I'd prefer to stay at home, put on some music, some wine and enjoy the view of my own partner, whom I can touch, cares and make love to during/after the 'entertainement'.

Private, intimate and more enjoyable I'd like to think?”
