Skipper Dave Sharpe hit 35 to lead the Birstall reply but the game was in the balance when they slipped to 108-6.
However, Steve White (17 not out) and George Ager (11 not out) took them over the finishing line.
Birstall have a 24-point lead over Woodhouse Eaves, who landed a nine-wicket victory over Burton-on-the-Wolds.
Opener Gary Moore gave Burton a flying start by clipping the first ball of the match for four.
But they soon ran into trouble against Paul Oliver (3-27) and Andy Stovell (4-21).
Only Moore (13) and Dave Freestone (39 not out) reached double figures as Burton were bowled out for 108 in 39.5 overs.
Brett Collins was in a hurry to seal Woodhouse's victory.
He smashed 78 not out off 58 balls, including six sixes and four fours, as the visitors powered to their target in just 17.2 overs.
Wigston Town were also in dominant form, beating Leuva Patidar by 10 wickets.
Seamers Ben Ashton, Luke Berriman and Andy Jones took three wickets each as they bowled out the visitors for 102 in 38 overs.
Paul Newnham (60 not out) and Jason Helmn (35 not out) led Wigston to victory in 21 overs.
Newbold Verdon used seven bowlers but Huncote still managed 186-8 in their 45 overs.
Tim Kirby led the way on 47 in Huncote's 186-9 with Jon Healey taking 3-46, including two wickets with successive deliveries.
Healey was then promoted to open as a pinch-hitter and cracked an explosive 30.
But Newbold slipped to 63-4 before Paul Bateman (57 not out), Matt Gransden (36) and Huw Davies (29 not out) steered them home.
Broughton Astley are still looking for their first league victory of the season after suffering an eight-wicket defeat at Leicester Caribbeans.
Sam Tingle's 59 led Broughton to 151-6 with Caribbeans' seamer Imran Ashiq taking 4-22.
But that proved nothing like enough as Caribbeans opener Umar Khan cracked 54 and Kenris Galloway 45 not out as Caribbeans reached their target in the 45th over.
By contrast, bowlers were in charge for most of the time at Twycross. On a damp wicket, the home batsmen were in a promising position on 90-4 with 15 overs left, Andy Scott scoring 37 and David Rose 24.
But they suffered a couple of run-outs and, with Appleby Magna seamer Russ Barker taking 5-26, they collapsed to 103 all out in 38 overs.
Rose took a couple of early wickets but Scott Nicholson (44), and Nigel Hughes (30 not out) steered Appleby to a seven-wicket victory.
Leaders Leicester Ivanhoe 2nds strengthened their grip on the Division One title-chase with a three-wicket win over one of their closest rivals, S&T Westonians.
