The Digital Music Index, produced by monitoring service Musicmetric and made available to the BBC, has analysed illegal downloads for first half of 2012 and showed a total of 43 million albums and singles were downloaded illegally in the UK during the first six months of the year.

According to the research, the most illegally shared artist in Leicester is Ed Sheeran which is shared on average 754 times per month. The data also reveals that people in Leicester also share Noel Gallagher a lot compared to the UK average.

Researchers discovered there were more illegal downloads per person in Manchester than any other UK spot, followed by Nottingham and Southampton.

The figures revealed 78% of the BitTorrent downloads - a technique to simultaneously source from multiple locations - were albums and the remainder singles.

The survey covered the entire BitTorrent sphere and claimed to offer the most accurate picture yet of the digital music cyberspace.

“I paid to have a vinyl copy of a record. I paid to have it on cassette. And again on CD. Why should I then have to pay to have something that is just a virtual copy of the same item again. A download doesn't have any cost involved as it doesn't come with any accompanying disc, tape nor sleeve notes.

My licence to own a piece of music should cover ALL forms of copy of that piece of music and not allow the record companies to sell, at inflated prices, the same item again as it doesn't cost them (relatively) that much to transfer it on to another media.”

“@DBLeicester - Why isn't everyone charged an extra £2/month? Because there are vast numbers of people who don't illegally download music (and in some cases, don't download ANY music), why should they have to pay extra for it?”

“I wonder if people who download copyrighted media which isn't available for purchase would ever be taken to court.”

    “@Graydjames

It's not the same as physically stealing a camera though as that is an actual object. The company have actually lost stock to the value they would have sold it for.

If you copy a bit of software or a music album you aren't actually physically taking anything from the company. I'm not saying that it's ok just that your analogy wasn't quite right, in my opinion anyway.”

“Why isn't every customer connected to the internet charged a small fee, say an extra £2 per month on what they pay now. According to The Office For National Statistics, That what equate to approximately £42m per month, or £504m per year. That money can then go to directly to the copyright owners/artists. A new site is set up to allow every connected customer access to downloading whatever they like, whenever they like, whether that be music, or films. Piracy would be eradicated in these sectors, £504m would be generated and everyone is happy. You are not going to stop piracy, no matter what you have in place. The best thing to do is look at how best to charge for downloaded material and distribute the funds generated appropriately.”

“If the record companies didnt rip people off with the over inflated prices of CD Albums, fewer people would download illegally.

I download, pop it in the car, and if I like it, I'll buy it when the price comes down to about a fiver - you cant beat having the case/sleeve/picture disc really - but at the right price.

It all comes down to money, they are greedy robbing dogs, and we're tight ****s who want something for nothing, clearly a bit of middle ground is needed.

Despite their best efforts, they've still not managed to shut down the pirate bay's site, it's just been renamed tpb pirateparty org uk. And thats just one site of many.

Stop ripping us off, and we'll buy more - SIMPLES!”

“I always remember a guy I knew once, intelligent, well educated and mature, who had ripped off a well known computer software program for photo editing, justifying his actions by saying he could not afford to buy it and that this was the only way he would be able to get it. The same man would never in a million years give even a second thought to going into Currys and stealing the digital camera that he used but which had cost about the same as the program cost.

It is this kind of bizarre logic that the music, film and computer software people are up against.

I'm no saint on downloading, I have done it in the past, but it isn't right and those who claim it is justified simply haven't a clue.”
