Leicester City took their level of pre-season performance up several notches with an emphatic win at London Road last night.

There was a double for striker Steve Howard on a night of plenty of goalmouth action involving Paulo Sousa's side and their League One hosts.

Andy King opened the scoring after 19 minutes before DJ Campbell made it 2-0 eight minutes later with his fifth goal in as many pre-season games.

Dany N'Guessan added a third after 53 minutes before substitute Howard struck after 81 and 90 minutes. Grant McCann scored a consolation goal for Posh.

City made four changes from the team which drew at Oxford on Saturday with starts for Conrad Logan, Robbie Neilson, Matt Oakley and N'Guessan.

City also included Swiss triallist Zlatko Hebib among the substitutes.

Former City favourite James Wesolowski was in the Posh line-up.

Wesolowski had the game's first chance when he went close from long range after 11 minutes as City struggled to deal with Nathaniel Mendez-Laing's long throw.

But City went close to taking the lead after 17 minutes when Oakley, making his first pre-season start, floated a delightful ball into the penalty area and Andy King's fine header was cleared on to the crossbar by Posh defender Ryan Bennett.

But King was not to be denied and, two minutes later, he gave City the lead. Posh keeper Joe Lewis fumbled a Neilson right-wing cross and the gift was gratefully accepted by the Welsh midfielder.

Neilson made a timely goal-line clearance after McCann's free-kick hit the wall and spun dangerously into the penalty area as Posh looked to make a response after a spell of the match dominated by City.

But a second goal from City was no more than they deserved and a cracking goal it was after 27 minutes.

Neilson's fine pass out of defence enabled Fryatt to power forward and pick out Campbell with a precise through-ball and the striker's confident side-foot finish did the rest.

Lewis then produced a terrific save to deny Campbell a second goal after good play from Fryatt with the two strikers forming a very useful partnership.

Posh started the second half well and Aaron Mclean sent a header just wide of a post.

But City moved further ahead when Fryatt set up N'Guessan after 53 minutes and he scored with a superbly-struck shot from the angle.

At the other end, Logan made a stunning reflex save to deflect McCann's powerfully-struck free-kick on to the crossbar.

The City keeper also did well to block a fierce drive from Posh substitute Arron Davies and Dave Hibbert's follow-up attempt struck a post. In the final quarter of the match, Sousa introduced a string of substitutes to the action including Hebib, whose decent right-wing cross deserved a better result than just evading the City front-line.

But the trialist collected a booking for a foul on McCann before Howard dragged a shot just wide of the target after good work from substitutes Richie Wellens and Jeff Schlupp.

Howard got his reward nine minutes from time with an angled right-footed drive after capitalising on a poor back-pass.

McCann scored a fine free-kick after 83 minutes to give Posh some reward for their contribution to an entertaining clash. However, Howard had the final say with his second goal of the night right on full-time.

City: Logan, Neilson, Hobbs, Morrison, Berner, N'Guessan, King, Oakley, Dyer, Fryatt, Campbell. Subs: Kennedy (for Berner 62), Hebib (for Neilson 66), Howard (for Campbell 66), Wellens (for King 68), Parkes (for Morrison 72), John (for Dyer 72), Chambers (for Fryatt 76), Schlupp (for N'Guessan 76), Verma (for Oakley 76), Howard (for Campbell 66), Weale.

“Bit of a conflict with the eye witness report on one of the other Topics regarding Fryatt.
He seemed like provider from this, rather than anonymous.

Logan gets a credit also and so does Neilson.. obviously an official report will look more at the positives.

Don't really know what to think, as I wasn't at the game.”
