Leicester City mayor Sir Peter Soulsby's tribute to 'loving' wife
Leicester City Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby's wife has died.
Lady Alison passed away at 9pm on Saturday, weeks after being diagnosed with cancer. She was 63.
Last night Sir Peter paid tribute to his wife of more than 40 years.
He said: "I am enormously blessed to have had such a loving and supportive wife and I will miss her desperately.
"She was my rock during the ups and downs of my political career, as well as one of my strongest critics."
Lady Alison was diagnosed with an advanced form of cancer eight weeks ago, after a period of feeling unwell.
The couple first met at primary school more than 50 years ago, and married in 1969. During his time as MP for Leicester South she helped him deal with local casework as his office manager.
They have three daughters – one of whom is city councillor Elly Cutkelvin – and six grandchildren.
Despite his loss, Sir Peter plans to chair today's scheduled cabinet meeting.
He said: "The work of the mayor goes on. I have been enormously impressed with the support I have received from council colleagues during a difficult time."
