"She was my rock during the ups and downs of my political career, as well as one of my strongest critics."
Lady Alison was diagnosed with an advanced form of cancer eight weeks ago, after a period of feeling unwell.
The couple first met at primary school more than 50 years ago, and married in 1969. During his time as MP for Leicester South she helped him deal with local casework as his office manager.
They have three daughters – one of whom is city councillor Elly Cutkelvin – and six grandchildren.
Despite his loss, Sir Peter plans to chair today's scheduled cabinet meeting.
He said: "The work of the mayor goes on. I have been enormously impressed with the support I have received from council colleagues during a difficult time."

“Indeed this is very sad news and thoughts go to Peter and his family. He is profession with regard to him carrying on with his duties; it is shame that with all the pay issues of late he has this to contend with now. I wish him well and I am sure he can and is doing a fine job (despite all the other issues).”
