A city MP has called on people in Leicester to sign a petition in support of the ban on fox-hunting.

Sir Peter Soulsby, Labour MP for Leicester South, gave his support to the online petition and described the Conservative party's plan to revoke the ban as "nonsensical".

Fox-hunting and hare coursing were outlawed in England and Wales in 2004.

Sir Peter said: "Not only is the ban making a difference, but it is also supported by the overwhelming majority of the British public.

"David Cameron spoke up for fox-hunting in his maiden speech and I find it unbelievable the Conservatives have pledged to make getting rid of the fox-hunting ban a priority if they win the next election.

"With all the challenges the world is currently facing, this just doesn't make sense."

“Leicestershire is famous for it's Foxhunting and has produced a lot of money and employment in the County, but the MP is as always misleading people in his letter as David Cameron should he win the next Election has promised a Free Vote on the repeal of this ill thought out ban which has allowed more cruelty to take place in the Countryside than ever did before, Should the MP be talking about more important issues instead of bringing up Hunting when they have no answers for the mess they have got us into.”

“If Rob does not know the many good things Sir Peter has done in Leicester over many years, then truly he seems to know very little. Back to fox hunting. I have never liked the idea of viciously pulling apart defenceless live animals just for adult entertainment. No doubt that was one reason I stopped being a member of the Conservative party. Another was you had to be really rich to get anywhere, and like the foxes, the rich often care little for those less well off than themselves. I do not like the idea of making thousands of lower paid people redundant just so that rich ones can pay less tax. By the way I have never ever voted Labour.”

“I agree with Dan, what has Sir Peter done that benefits Leicester? He spoke out about saving Post Offices, but did not then vote to save them. Now people in parts of the city have no Post Office. So much for his priorities.”

“I'm not sure what relevance fox hunting has for a city MP. May be he should spend more time fighing issues in the city. He was very quiet about the demolition of the Bowstring Bridge.”
