Leicester Mercury to welcome guest editor Alan Birchenall
Friday's edition of the Leicester Mercury is being put together by a guest editor – City legend Alan Birchenall.
For the first time in its 139-year history, the Leicester Mercury has handed over its editorial reins to a guest.
The Birch, as he is popularly known, has commissioned a series of features for the paper.
He has also put questions to a variety of well-known Leicestershire people for the edition, ranging from city mayor Sir Peter Soulsby to MP Keith Vaz.

Alan also grills Mercury editor Richard Bettsworth about the future of local newspapers, Leveson and The Wombles.
There will also be a feature by the Birch on fashion and an interview by our curmudgeonly columnist Fred Leicester with fellow moaner Alan Leicester.
Richard Bettsworth said: "It is a real pleasure working with Alan to produce this special edition. Alan has come up with lots of great ideas and it will make for a really interesting and unusual edition."
Alan will be spending tomorrow at the Mercury's headquarters in St George Street, making decisions at our news conferences and liaising with reporters and other members of editorial staff as his edition is put together.
He wants to spend part of the day answering readers' questions, so this is your chance to grill him.
If there is a burning question you would like to put to the Birch, e-mail it to the address below by noon tomorrow.
Questions can be about anything you like – Alan himself, Leicester City, local news or anything else that takes your fancy.
The Birch will answer as many of your questions as he can manage to fit in around his editing duties, and the results will appear on our website.
E-mail your questions, putting 'The Birch' in the subject line, to:

“I hope his skills as an editor are better than his skills as a footballer were!.”
