Leicester Riders sign Anthony Rowe from Plymouth Raiders

Leicester Riders have moved to replace the injured John Fraley by signing 6ft 8in power forward Anthony Rowe from the Plymouth Raiders.

The signing has hit problems with his current club raising a late objection – preventing Riders licensing him in time for the double header of games this weekend.

Riders are away at Manchester Giants tonight and at home to Mersey Tigers tomorrow at the John Sandford Centre (7.30pm).

Riders general manager Russell Levenston said, “We had permission from Plymouth and the player and his agent said he was a free agent, and we have signed him.

“But Plymouth have raised an objection and have not released him – so we will have to resolve that with the BBL and England Basketball next week. It is disappointing the objection was raised so late, but these things happen.”

Rowe was born in Plymouth, and went to college in the US, where he played at North Georgia State, and was at the Cognac Club, in France, for a period after university, before joining Plymouth.

The 26-year-old has spent three seasons with the Raiders, but missed the start of this season with a knee injury, having had an operation on his cartilage in the off season.

Rowe was the captain of the Raiders and finished last season averaging over 13 points and 8 rebounds a game. He missed the game against the Riders last weekend, when Leicester came from behind to beat the Raiders 83 to 80.

The Jelson Homes DMU backed Riders head coach Rob Paternostro said, “When we heard that Anthony might becoming available, we did not waste any time getting hold of him, with Plymouth’s permission, and got him up to training.

“In his brief time with us, we were impressed – both in terms of what he can do on the court and the other intangibles he can bring to this team.”

“Anyone who has been around the BBL for a while, knows Anthony is a very well respected player, and he brings a consistent game every night. He is a guy who has won a lot of games. I am really pleased with the variety in his game, and I think Anthony can be a big addition to the Riders.”
