For a keen-as-mustard 24-year-old, there are few better places to learn your trade than Leicester Tigers.

Argentine winger Lucas Gonzalez Amorosino – nicknamed 'Speedy' because of his middle name – is taking in words of wisdom from the coaching staff and playing colleagues at Welford Road. Men who have achieved all there is to achieve in the game.

Since arriving in Leicester on trial at the start of the season, Amorosino has bedded in well.

After making the 23 for the opening home game of the campaign against Newcastle, he made seven appearances in quick time until he suffered a stress fracture of his right leg in the LV= Cup match at Leeds which stopped him in his tracks.

Back in the fold for last Friday's LV= Cup clash with Bath, Amorosino plays at Northampton today and is loving life 7,000 miles away from the amateur rugby he is used to in Buenos Aires.

"It was frustrating being out for two months with a broken leg because I had been playing some good rugby and was due to be picked for the Argentina squad for the autumn internationals when it happened," he said.

"I don't like watching. I prefer playing. But it's a dangerous sport and these things happen.

"Now I am back playing I have to get back to that level again. It is important for me.

"It is great playing in Leicester because they are one of the best clubs in Europe.

"I came from a local club in Buenos Aires called Pucara. They like to play good rugby and I feel the same here because Leicester play a lot of attacking rugby and that is good for me.

"Everybody at the club are good people. People like Aaron Mauger have taught me a lot.

"There is lots of experience everywhere and these people have taught me lots of things about rugby because they have played at a high level."

Amorosino made a name for himself in the Pumas team which made the final of the Sevens World Cup in Dubai in March last year.

Fast hands and faster feet earned him international honours with the full Argentina side, and he scored a try in each of his first two internationals before playing in both Tests against England last summer.

The call to head north came out of the blue – but it was one he clearly remembers.

"Marcos Ayerza (Tigers' Argentine prop) called me and said that a lot of people are injured at Leicester," he said.

"They said they liked me and asked if I would like to come here to play.

"I have six brothers and a big family like Marcos, so it is hard being away at times because I miss them, but it is okay.

"It's a transition for me. If you like to play your sport at a high level, you need to come here (the northern hemisphere).

"It is difficult to do that in Argentina so this is a platform for my future.

"It helps that my two brothers are here now and I went home for a week two months ago so it's not too bad.

"The English people speak so fast – but some people say we speak faster than the English!

"My English is getting better now though because Marcos and Castro (Tigers prop Martin Castrogiovanni) have been helping me.

"The rugby is good too. Backs coach Matt O'Connor has some of the best training that I have had.

"He likes to play a lot and has a good structure which involves everyone touching the ball. I really like this rugby. He has good ideas."

And on the back of an initial short-term deal, Amorosino is hoping to make that a long-term one at the end of the year.

"I would like to stay here next season," he said. "I like England and Leicester and I hope that is possible. At the end of this month, we should have reached a decision."
