Leicester city councillor is 'snubbed' by colleague over cuts
A disgruntled Labour councillor publicly vented his fury on Twitter claiming he had been "ignored" by a party colleague over controversial council cuts.
New Parks councillor John Blackmore used the instant messaging site to openly criticise cabinet member Andy Connelly, who is in charge of culture and leisure in the city.
Leicester City Council plans to close creches which are subsidised by the council, as well as three leisure centre bars which run at a loss. New Parks Leisure Centre will be hit by the closure of both its creche and sports bar.
Coun Blackmore is supporting a campaign to keep both the creche and bar open and was upset not to be invited to a meeting over its future. The meeting in question was held by the city's leisure boss Coun Andy Connelly, who invited ward councillors Coun Colin Hall and Coun Stephen Corrall plus council officers to discuss the closure of the creche and bar but not Coun Blackmore. Both Coun Hall and Coun Corrall are concerned at the closure plans and wanted to ask questions at the meeting.
In a series of updates – called Tweets – to Conservative opposition members, Coun Blackmore wrote: "It's a shame that Coun Connelly could not be bothered to contact me to reply to my e-mails.
"Nor did he have the decency to invite me to a recent meeting at the centre, although he did invite my ward councillors. Odd that. Coun Connelly has refused to have any type of dialogue with me on the subject of the bar and creche."
He then wrote: "I will sit back and enjoy the cr*p about to dumped on me by the councillor I mentioned."
When contacted by the Mercury, Coun Connelly said he had not invited him to a private meeting about the future of the bar and creche at the leisure centre because he was told by a fellow councillor "not to bother because John wouldn't leave the house".
He said: "Looking back, perhaps I should have invited him to the meeting personally rather than relying on the word of someone else. But he hasn't tried to get in touch with me via e-mail. There's no rift between us as far as I am aware."
However, Coun Blackmore claimed he had repeatedly tried to get in touch with Coun Connelly via e-mail.
"I've sent several e-mails to him asking for more details about the closures but I have just been ignored. This is no way for a cabinet member to treat me. We're both Labour members, we're both supposed to be on the same side."
The city council says the cutbacks are being made because the creches, which people pay a small fee to use, are not well attended.
Closing loss-making council bars would save £11,500, according to the authority. Coun Blackmore has been using Twitter since January 9 and has posted to the site 190 times.

“About time the Council got round to closing loss making services which are funded by rate payers..
Perhaps, out of the savings, they could buy 2 new footballs for these Councillors. That would save one of them taking his ball home.”

“Cllr Blackmore is absolutely right to ask questions about this. He should be tweeting to his fellow Labour members to put pressure on over this though, not the opposition. How do we know that if the bar is closed some groups who use it after squash or keep fit or whatever won't want to go there anymore? The social aspect might be as important as the exercise to them. Losing it could lose more money than it saves if customers are lost.”
