Detectives today revealed a murder victim died from a single stab wound.

Nazir Taj Sheikh, 36, died in hospital after he was attacked in the St Saviour’s Road area of Highfields, Leicester, on Monday afternoon.

A post mortem carried out yesterday concluded the Leicester man died from a single stab wound.

Detectives investigating the stabbing are trying to find a motive for his murder and a huge manhunt is under way.

CCTV footage seen by the Mercury shows him stumbling into Grove Road from an alleyway leading from St Saviours Road, before falling to the ground.

He was found bleeding heavily minutes later by a builder, who told the Mercury: "There was so much blood, all down the alleyway."

The incident was shortly after 3.40pm, when children would have been walking home from Bridge Junior and Sacred Heart schools. Eighty police officers are now investigating the murder.

Detectives yesterday said they had no suspects, or details about Mr Sheikh's final hours.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Harrison said a knife had been recovered but it was too early to say whether it was the murder weapon.

Det Chief Insp Harrison said: "At this moment, we don't know the identity of the people involved in this death.

"What I'm trying to do is piece together Nazir's movements on Monday. It is too early to speculate on the circumstances surrounding his death.

"It was daylight and this is a busy street. I would urge anyone who had any contact with Nazir, or who knows what might have happened, to get in touch with any information."

He said it had not yet been established exactly where the stabbing took place.

Parts of Grove Road, St Saviours Road and Frederick Road were still cordoned off yesterday.

Det Chief Insp Harrison said that Mr Sheikh lived in Highfields.

The builder who found Mr Sheikh, who did not want to be named, said he wished he could have done more to help.

He said: "I'd finished work and was driving to the top of the road to turn round when I saw a guy lying next to the alleyway.

"I thought he was drunk and had fallen over but when I looked again I saw the floor was covered in blood.

"I jumped out and rang 999 and stayed with him until the ambulance came. I was trying to keep him conscious but he couldn't say anything.

"It's a shame we couldn't do anything to help."

Safraz Sheikh, who is not related to the victim, yesterday gave CCTV footage from the scene to the police.

The 19-year-old's parents installed cameras at their home a year ago following an attempted burglary, in which his father was stabbed in the hand.

Safraz said: "You can see him at the top of the screen. He comes out of the alleyway and looks a bit wobbly and then falls. He lies there for a few minutes and then he's seen.

"Then the ambulance and the police turn up."

Residents in the street have said the alleyway should be blocked up.

Safraz's mother said: "When the burglary attempt happened in our home, men came in wearing masks.

"They grabbed my face and pushed me on the settee.

"When they left, they ran off down the alleyway. There are no lights. People are always hanging about.

"This street never used to be that bad but we feel scared with that and now this."

Inspector Shane O'Neill, police commander for the area, said he wanted to reassure residents police were doing everything possible to find the person, or people responsible for Mr Sheikh's killing.

He said: "It is a serious incident but it is a rare occurrence.

"The police activity will continue and we are already speaking to community leaders and key people in the area."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0116 222 2222.
