Over the past half century, roundabouts have come and gone all round the city.

Some have been replaced by traffic lights, others by flyovers and some, such as the one at the London Road/Victoria Park Road intersection, are now surrounded by traffic lights.

Here, we see the construction of a roundabout that has long since been removed and replaced by traffic lights. It must have had a short life, as this photo was taken in May 1973.

It stood at the junction of Leicester's Welford Road with Chapel Lane and Knighton Lane East. The roundabout was part of a scheme "to ease the flow of traffic at this busy Leicester suburban intersection."

The approaches were to be widened "to allow three or more lanes of traffic to enter the new island simultaneously". There was also to be "the provision for lay-bys."

It has to be said that despite the fact that the junction was considered busy in 1973, it looks fairly quiet in this photograph — and there's no doubt that the scene is a lot busier these days!

“The roundabout that was mentioned on London Road / Victoria Park Road is a nightmare now - they should remove the roundabout and just put lights in - also an ideal place for a roundabout to be installed would be outside the train station where you can't turn right coming in from Waterloo Way under the current layout and have to find your way around back streets to do so”

“In it's present incarnation this junction (Welford Road/Chapel Lane) has been the scene of many accidents. The traffic lights need to be sequenced to allow right turning traffic from all directions dedicated right turn lights. If this is not feasible bring back the roundabout.”
