A lucky lottery player has won £1 million with a ticket bought in Leicester – but has yet to claim the prize.

National Lottery bosses think the winner is unaware of their huge slice of good fortune because it is more than more than two weeks since EuroMillions draw.

Although the punter’s numbers did not come up, the ticket carries a randomly generated raffle code which has scooped the windfall.

The ticket with the code LZT634986 was bought somewhere within the city of Leicester on Tuesday, January 10, and won the draw that evening. They have until July 8 to claim the cash.

Every Tuesday and Friday a millionaire is made in the UK through the raffle codes, which are published in newspapers and online along with the other EuroMillions numbers.

A National Lottery spokesperson said: “We’re desperate to find this mystery ticket holder and unite them with their winnings – this amazing prize could really make a huge difference to somebody’s life as they start 2012.

“We’re urging everyone to check their old EuroMillions tickets again or look anywhere a missing ticket could be hiding so that this prize can turn someone into the newest member of the lottery millionaire club. We have the champagne on ice.”

Due to strict rules allowing winners to remain completely anonymous, National Lottery operators Camelot are unable to reveal which shop the lucky ticket was bought at or at what time of day.

The county has had a few lottery winners in the past, with the latest £1 million jackpot won on a scratch card by a roofer from Loughborough in November last year.

A win of £1 million invested in the bank in a basic savings account could earn monthly interest of about £2,500.

Neil Savjani, of Bobby Dhanjal Wealth Management in King Street, Leicester city centre, said there were bigger riches to be earned by investing the money wisely.

He said: “If the winner came to us asking what to do with their £1 million, the first port of call would be paying off existing debts and then going through circumstances and considering the massive array of alternatives.

“The important thing would be to spread – at the moment a lot of people are investing in gold and gilts, which are loans to governments, but even they can go down in value.”

The National Lottery has created more than 2,800 millionaires since its launch in November 1994.

If no one in Leicester claims the mystery million before the 180-day period is up, the cash will go into the National Lottery Good Causes fund.

“I play both the LOROS and RSPCA weekly lotteries. Admittedly the winnings would not change my life that much but the money generated for the causes certainly changes the live of others for the better. Winning would just be a bonus and so far I have had a few small wins.”

“I wonder if there are figures for total winnings not being claimed in, say, a year. Good it goes to the good causes.”

“I don't bother with the lottery much now, but on more than one occasion in the past I've dug out lottery tickets from my wallet, only to find that they are past their 6 months and expired. A few spare quid on the lottery each week is as good a way to spend it as any - but just don't expect to win! The odds are massively against you winning, BUT people do win and it could be anyone with a ticket.

My biggest win came from a scratch card when they very first came out, £50, and muggins gave it to his slightly dodgy girlfriend at the time.”
