Leicestershire CCC bowlers earn reward – senior coach Tim Boon
Harry Gurney was undoubtedly the star of the show as Leicestershire launched a fightback against Surrey at Grace Road yesterday.
The 22-year-old returned career-best figures of 5-82 to help dismiss Surrey for 329.
However, senior coach Tim Boon was more than satisfied with the performance of the attack as whole as Surrey lost eight wickets for just 112 runs in a little more than a session.
"I thought we bowled really well on Wednesday," said Boon. "We got our reward for that yesterday after we kept high quality batters to two and a bit runs an over.
"They became more and more expansive and the wickets came. Jim Allenby bowled nicely to hold up one end and without the other bowlers Harry wouldn't have got those wickets.
"Having said that, he bowled brilliantly. It is a very special achievement to take five wickets for the first time. I'm absolutely delighted for him."
Boon also felt that Leicestershire had taken a lesson from the early Surrey batters, who showed great patience in building their innings, even if the visitors did lose their way yesterday morning.
"They showed that they were prepared to apply themselves. The lads have looked at that, taken some of the information and applied it to our own game," said Boon.
"We looked more composed. The shot selections were a lot better and, after we had a good start from Matthew Boyce and Josh Cobb, the experience of Boeta Dippenaar and HD Ackerman came into play.
"We know we have still got a long way to go but we showed promise. We haven't got any superstars, just local lads who are gelling together."
