Leicestershire CCC senior coach Tim Boon salutes Will Jefferson's century
Leicestershire senior coach Tim Boon hailed Will Jefferson's first Championship century for Leicestershire as a "great achievement."
Jefferson's stunning innings helped County take control on the first day of their Championship clash with Surrey as they closed on 337-4.
Jefferson's contribution to that was 135 made in real style. "It was a great achievement and we've had a glass of champagne to mark it," said Boon.
"There was some tennis-ball bounce early on but Will was able to smash the length balls for four. Then the spinners came on and he dominated them."
Jefferson showed tremendous variety, too, in his innings.
"He went to 49 with a reverse-sweep, which made us smile," said Boon. "Then he proceeded to smite the ball out of the ground to reach his 100. That was a fitting tribute to the power that he hit the ball with."
Boon was also pleased with the way Jefferson and James Taylor batted together, along with the "resolute" approach of Paul Nixon early in a day which was rounded off soundly by Jacques du Toit and Tom New.
"We showed some fantastic resilience to go with Jefferson's stroke-play," said Boon.
Meanwhile Boon is hopeful that all-rounder Andrew McDonald will be fit to face Northamptonshire on Tuesday in the Twenty20 Cup.
The Australian was ruled out of the current match with a hamstring problem.
"It was too high risk to play him but I am reasonably confident he will be able to play on Tuesday," said Boon.
Off-spinner Jigar Naik was named in the side for the Surrey game to replace McDonald as the County selected two slow bowlers, left-armer Claude Henderson also in the line-up.
"The pitch looks as though it will turn later on," said Boon. "Jigar has been accumulating quite a few runs in the second team, too."
