Leicestershire's MPs claimed more than £205,000 in expenses for their second homes last year according to the latest figures published by the House of Commons.

The claims were made during the financial year 2008/09, when MPs knew claims would be published as the expenses scandal was breaking.

Figures released yesterday show MPs claiming almost solely for mortgage interest or rent payments, rather than the luxury goods and furniture that fuelled public anger.

Loughborough MP Andy Reed, however, claimed for a cordless phone at £90, a satellite Free-view box for £150, three small tables for £690 and towels and bathroom accessories for £109.

The MP also had one month's claim for council tax, for £62, rejected as previous claims had already covered the entire year's bill.

Mr Reed said he was not prepared to discuss the claims yesterday – but directed people to his website for his comments on the issue. He wrote on the website: "Attempts at rational debate on expenses is almost futile now so I won't add any additional comments to the information that is now available."

Records show Leicester East MP Keith Vaz changed the address that he claimed his allowances for, from his Leicester home to a property in London.

It has already emerged that between 2004 and 2007, Mr Vaz claimed more than £69,000 for a flat in Westminster, despite his family home being just 12 miles from Parliament.

The money was used to pay for monthly mortgage interest payments, grocery and cleaning.

Then in May 2007, he switched his designated second home from his £545,000 London flat to a house in the Humberstone area of Leicester. It was at this address that he made about £16,000 of claims for furniture and furnishings – money he has now repaid.

It is unclear which London property he has now switched his designated second home to.

Yesterday's documents show Mr Vaz was asked to repay £840 relating to a claim that had been made twice in a previous year.

Mr Vaz was one of five MPs, along with Leicester South's Peter Soulsby, Bosworth's David Tredinnick, Blaby's Andrew Robathan and Harborough's Edward Garnier, who claimed the full amount they were entitled to in 2008/09, £24,006.

Melton MP Alan Duncan was demoted from the shadow cabinet earlier this year after making comments about MPs being treated harshly over expenses.

He also repaid some £5,000 after making claims for gardening in previous years.

For the main part in 2008/09 he restricted his claims to mortgage payments and utilities, but did ask for £1,250 for fuel oil.

Leicester East MP Patricia Hewitt claimed for accommodation, utilities and food bringing her total to £14,000.

The lowest claimer was North West Leicestershire MP David Taylor who asked for less than half of what he was entitled to.

He claimed £250 less each month than he could have done for his London home because he did not want the taxpayer to subsidise his daughter's stay with him while she was working in the capital.

He said: "My expenses are there for everyone to see and if they want to query anything they are welcome to do so."

At the start of this financial year the three political party leaders agreed new temporary rules for expenses which restricted MPs to claiming for utilities, rent and mortgage interest and food.

Meanwhile Sir Thomas Legg, the man charged with auditing MPs' expenses, will decide if any claims made by MPs going back to 2004 will need to be repaid.

"Crook, crook, crook, crook-ability, that's the beauty of Vaz!"”

“MP's still don't get how angry the public are about this. I can't wait for the hear what they will recieve as a pay rise to compensate for these morally fraudulent expenses. I hear they are exempt from the cap on public sector pay. The reason MP's remain out of touch with normal people is not that we pay them too little it is that we pay them too much.”

“Bandwagon Vaz has two homes within a 12 mile radius of Westminster and also this constituency home. He is a 'Flipper' and he only does this to reap the benefits. He is not the only one who flips, but he is the only one consistently associated with scandel. A disgraceful excuse of an MP.”
