Leicestershire election hopefuls quizzed over aims for police position
Members of the public last night had a chance to question the three people who hope to become Leicestershire's first elected police and crime commissioner.
The hustings, at the Holiday Inn, St Nicholas Circle, in the city centre, was organised by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and Neighbourhood Watch, and chaired by Mercury editor Richard Bettsworth.

The Labour Party has selected Leicester's assistant mayor Sarah Russell, who represents the Westcotes area of the city.
Leicester community worker and businessman Suleman Nagdi is standing as an independent.
The police and crime commissioners (PCCs) will replace the existing police authorities which have traditionally set police budgets, appointed senior officers and scrutinised force performance.
The Leicestershire PCC will earn about £70,000 and will themselves be scrutinised by a panel of local councillors.
The Home Office believes commissioners will be more accountable to the public because they are elected, whereas police authority members include appointed councillors, magistrates and independents.
The CMI and Neighbourhood Watch are holding a session at Rutland County Museum, Catmose Street, Oakham, tonight, between 7pm and 9pm.
The Diocese of Leicester is staging an event at Emmanuel Church, Forest Road, Loughborough, at 7.30pm on Monday, and Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce will hold a hustings in De Montfort University's Hugh Aston building, the Newarke, at 7.15pm on Wednesday, October 31.
For a full report on last night's hustings, see tomorrow's Mercury.

“Anyone who has had any dealings with Sarah Russell will know that she has consistently failed to deliver on anything that really matters and the only reason she is standing is to attempt to gain political control over the police. The biggest barrier to things getting done in this city is the lethargy / incompetence of the council leaders such as Russell (rather than the Do-ers) and how is this likely to change with her in post? Mr Loader - nice bloke but the RAF is not the police and Wing is not Leicester city - he would be like a fish out of water and I doubt would last 4 years with any credibility.
Apart from Suleman Nagdi, the others have talked about interfering in operational policing tactics which is NOT within their powers and one can only hope that the Chief Constable tells them so. Suleman would have the interests of the WHOLE community at heart and would do so without fear or favour. He gets my vote.”

“Listening to people
Jeez
It's a 'doing' job but as Bob as consistently failed to offer any other skills or experience that Sara Russell can offer we can safley assume that he does not have any.
By the way Bob - adding new comments to old stories so that they appear higher than the ones where you fail to answer straightforward questions is more than a little weak. It's like pushing the difficult tasks to the bottom of the pile - they are still there to be actioned (if you have the will)”

“If the candidates were all really independent, and that is probably impossible, I would choose the candidate who could make as good a job as possible in the impossible circumstances which would only be one that promised not to privatise and dumb down the police.
Women are usually far superior to men when it comes down to talking and listening to ordinary people, and also when victim support is needed. These are vital aspects of the job.
However like almost everyone else, I disagree with the remarkably stupid idea of a single autocratic police commissioner having responsibility over a huge, diverse area. I also disagree with the huge salary being donated, paid for by taxpayers.
As for politics, I have never voted Labour or for any left wing party before, but there is no way I would vote for a totally out of touch Con, and especially not one who has committed himself to a vast privatisation or outsourcing of the police force.”

“Bob491,
What would you have to say if all 3 candidates were independent.
You claim to not want political bias in the Police but you are using these pages to spout politically biassed fire. So far, you haven't said anything without a political bias so surely, please sit back and question yourself about the true nature of your input.
You are dragging all commentators into a political slanging competition without actually measuring the pro's and cons of the PCC concept. Which is what really counts!”

“Quote: "This whole voting system for this job is a scam."
True. The Con PM Cameron has only introduced police commissioners to make it much easier to privatise the police using security firms such as G4S. He assumes that many of these new police commissioners will be Cons; and they will be if apathy rules and people do not turn out to vote against this dreadful waste of money by voting against their Con candidates.
Besides no way can this Con candidate be of any use (apart from privatising our police for the PM) since he has never lived or worked in Leicester or Leicestershire and has no idea of the problems there. How on earth was he was selected? The Cons still like their 'Lords of the Manor', don't they.”

“No one who has a political aligence should have control over the police. The problems with the police and courts is the fault of both labour and the conservatives, now through cuts and through labour when they where in power blagging their expenses. The truth is that the british people have less democracy every day. This whole voting system for this job is a scam.”
