Leicestershire's proposed eco-town has been rejected, the Government announced today.

Pennbury, a 15,000-home development for land between Oadby, Great Glen and Stoughton, failed to make the shortlist of preferred sites for the flagship homes developments.

It was also not mentioned in a so-called "second wave" of developments which needed more work before the Government would consider them again.

It is thought that transport proposals were a key factor in it not winning support.

The eco-town project was intended to meet housing needs and tackle climate change, with as many as 10 environmentally-friendly settlements built by 2020, but has been dogged by controversy and opposition from local communities.

The successful eco-town sites were Whitehill-Bordon in Hampshire, St Austell in Cornwall, Rackheath in Norfolk and North West Bicester in Oxfordshire.

“Apparently, "Pennbury" didn't even qualify for the reserve shortlist this time.

So the vast majority of folk locally, the Leicestershire County Council, Oadby & Wigston Borough Council, numerous Parish Councils and eminent political people think it is a DEAD DUCK.

Why not the Co-op and why not the Leicester City Council?!!”

Thank God they have seen sence and realised that they did not have the infastructure or transport system in place to support such a stupid laime idea. I just hope that they sort out the muppet that thought of it in the first place.Thankyou all of you this was a well one Victory for the People of SOUTH East Leicester. Mr Vaz well done again. “Wind farm is OK by me,Noise levels are similar to light planes, and they look quite nice. So what exactly is your point? BTW there is only only tiny area of this land suitable for wind energy, so that is a bit of a non starter, but nice try for a wind-up-merchant. What next incinerator, travellers camp.... yawn yawn yawn.”

“Well if everybody¿s getting their knickers in a twist about this obviously not got more serious things to worry about. You can tell me you have to work hard, but I can tell you you¿re not the only one who has to work hard. All the bad things going on in the world and people get so uptight about the eco town. Think all those need to get in the real world and give a thought for those that are not so lucky”

“To Wayne, yes i do remember that once my home I live in now was built on fields once, as most houses obviously were built on over many many years. But living in Oadby all my life I remember when Oadby in the 50's was a small village with just enough shops here and now look at it, its no longer a village, with hundreds of houses built here and of course Beauchamp College as it is now being the big draw for people to flood this once beautiful little village, but have we complained NO we have not, just accepted it. But Penbury is going to far. So dont you be selfish. Don't kid yourself AFFORDABLE housing at Penbury, do you actually know how much they were going to cost. Obviously not.!!!!!”

“I just want to reiterate my thoughts from a previous article, and sad that various 'pro' individuals feel that those who opposed this development are somehow unsimpathetic to others needs. For the majoirty against the Co-op development, this was not the case, it was just the wrong development in the wrong place at the wrong time. If more thought had been put in for a development in a more sensible place within Leicester/shire, then surely it would have progressed further. As there are many other more sensible options than the Co-op's attempt at making vast profits (which in todays market has in itself become questionable). Who knows, but to save face maybe the Co-op got cold feet and actually put pressure on the Goverment to drop their scheme!

Anyway, I just hope this is the final nail, in a dead duck project from the Co-op. The whole process has been a great waste of time and money, and has done little for the Co-op's standing in this area. They now have a great deal to do to rebuild their trust with the local communities......or maybe it's time for them to go altogether!

I am just grateful for the total commitment from all local groups opposed to this ridiculous development, local MPs and councils (except Leicester City of cause), but special thanks to Cascet.

Just await a gracious comment from Bill in the West Midlands.”

“The not in my back yard brigade win again. It's very selfish that those people that have already have homes are elated that they have stopped others less fortunate than themselves, from getting an affordable home. Remember your home was once a green field too. Shame on you.”

“Sarah your comments disgust me to be honest.
How do you know we have all cosy little lives with nothing to worry about. What gives you the right to call us selfish to want to keep preserve countryside what little is left for all future generations. Do we really want all these so called concrete jungles going up. My life is far from cosy I can tell you and I have to work hard, you know nothing so keep your senseless opinions to yourself.”

“sarah, leics - I think you miss the point, this is a lot bigger picture than a few jobs. I was born and bread in Glenfield and have seen it over the last 40 years lose all its green areas and charm. Yes we are all struggling but jobs come and go, green pastures once built on have gone forever”
