Leicestershire youngster Alex recovering from eye op
Young cancer survivor Alex Barnes is recovering from eye surgery.
The six-year-old from Fleckney has had an operation to correct his crossed eye.
Surgeons have tightened the optic nerve which had been slackened when Alex had life-saving surgery to remove a brain tumour in 2006.
He later had pioneering proton therapy in America after the cancerous tumour reappeared.
Alex has been clear of cancer for just over a year and his parents, Rosalie and Paul, are hoping Alex's eye operation at Leicester Royal Infirmary last Thursday will be his last.
It had been due to be carried out on January 21 but was cancelled at the last minute after the ventilation system in the operating theatre broke down.
Mrs Barnes said: "Alex was very nervous about the eye operation, which was unlike him.
"It was a big operation and surgeons say that it is going to take some time to settle down. Thankfully, his eye sight is not affected.
"Alex can't open his eyes and is in quite a lot of pain but one of the first things he is hoping to do is watch wrestling on TV."
