Leicester Mercury

It's my belief that Mr Soulsby is showing a passion in attempting to save some of Leicester city's heritage, even though it is late in the day: at the very least, we should be grateful for his enthusiasm in his efforts.

In regards to his looking to create a museum of the Richard III's artefacts etc, what could be a better place than the Leicester Castle building?

This would create a use for this fine property, as well as being placed on to the city's famous walks lists. Also, the area isn't too far from Grey Friar's priory, and is adjacent to Newarke Houses Museum.

More than 50 years ago, when Leicester was a major industrial city – vibrant, always busy and bustling with shoppers and workplace people – it was suggested that it was one of the cleanest cities in England, and also reputed to be the fifth wealthiest city in Europe.

The History of Leicester goes back to the Saxons, the Romans, then the Danes. This is known to be fact. This was followed by other major events, such as the Battle of Bosworth Field, the battle concerning Richard III.

So, all in all, Leicester city has a true history to look back on, not based on myth such as the likes of the man-in-tights, up the road.

The unfortunate part of our (recent) history concerning Leicester's heritage is the fact that previous councils were more concerned in attempting to progress, but at the expense of items of historical value.

In my estimation, the difference between this city and Nottingham is that they have made good decisions and have managed to blend the old with the new.

When building for the future, therefore, some important buildings have been saved, without losing their character.

Where this affects the city of Leicester is that if one looks to the outside investment interests, it is pretty obvious that Nottingham is nearly always the first choice.

It's my observation that the powers-that-be are making Nottingham the capital of the East Midlands.

I will not be surprised if we lose out to them, when the new East Midlands train station placement is announced.

Let's not forget that Nottingham had the cheek to virtually steal the East Midlands Airport for itself, without a concern for both Derby and Leicester. If anything, it should have been called Three Counties Airport.

So, on reflection, give Mr Soulsby a little generous support for his efforts: he is obviously a city man.

Though I reside in the county now, I am a city boy from Highfields.

I was witness to many of the destroyed areas of interest and beautiful buildings, gone forever.

I was a delivery bike boy from 14 years of age, all around the city, that was my patch.

Then the concrete towers appeared, followed by broken up communities, isolation, not knowing new neighbours, no connection, closed shops and post offices, the only meeting places for the elderly.

It goes on and on, even today.

Instead of bringing people together, all it has done, in my opinion, is cause division .

J Tait, Melton Mowbray.
