Local rugby: Great wins for Students and Leicester Lions
It was a good weekend all around in National Two North as Loughborough Students returned to winning ways and Leicester Lions also had a good victory.
Both saw off sides from Hull and took bonus points for good measure. Students won 33-15 at Hull Ionians, while Lions beat Hull 30-15 at home.
Although Students' win looks comfortable enough, they were only 19-15 up going into the final five minutes with three tries to their name.
However, late tries from David Hughes and leading scorer Nathan Lambden sealed the deal.
Hughes had got Students off to a flying start and George Drake converted to give them a 7-0 lead after just four minutes. However, Ionians hit back with a seventh-minute try of their own.
Phil Burgess returned from England Students' duty to good effect by adding the second try and, although the hosts pulled back a penalty, Students led 12-8 at the interval.
That was wiped away in the second half as Hull scored a converted try to go into the lead.
Students needed a positive response and got one. Firstly, Jamie Cullen crossed and Drake slotted the extras to put them back ahead.
Hughes and Lambden then wrapped things up. Both scores were converted by Drake and the bonus point was crucial given Macclesfield had a five-point win too.
Students remain three points ahead of Macclesfield, who have a game in hand.
Lions had Ben Walker in outstanding form as they saw off Hull.
Walker grabbed a hat-trick of tries, with his final score coming at the end to ensure a bonus point was gained.
Leading scorer Scott Alfeld was also on the scoresheet, while Jon Boden kicked two penalties and two conversions. Lions were never behind and leapfrogged their opponents into sixth place.
South Leicester rediscovered their scoring touch in National Three Midlands as they ran in 11 tries during an emphatic 67-3 win against Bedford Athletic.
The win was much needed for South to take them away from the relegation places.
Rich Lang and Chris Bale led the way with two tries each. Mark Bayley, Keiron Collins, Gaz Jones, Kris McFedries, Ben Antill, Wes Cartwright and Mark Lord also scored and Lord slotted six conversions.
Hinckley suffered disappointment though. Their play-off bid suffered a blow as they were beaten 20-10 at Peterborough, and they are now five points behind second-place Bromsgrove.
