Lorry brakes catch fire on M1 in Leicestershire

Emergency services were called out after a lorry's brakes caught fire on the M1 yesterday.

The vehicle was travelling south on the motorway when the incident happened shortly before 10.45am. The driver noticed smoke coming from below the vehicle and pulled over on to the hard shoulder between junction 23 at Loughborough and junction 23a at East Midlands Airport.

He called 999 and fire crews were sent from fire stations at Loughborough and Shepshed.

The flames were out by the time firefighters arrived at the scene, but they stayed to make sure the vehicle was safe.

The fire caused slight damage to the vehicle's brakes and the surrounding areas.

The driver of the lorry was not hurt in the incident and only slight disruption was caused to traffic travelling along the M1.
