Loughborough 'earthquake' felt across East Midlands

A small 'earthquake' centred on Loughborough, was felt across Leicestershire and other parts of the East Midlands at around 5.20am this morning (Friday 18 January 2013). The British Geological Survey said the tremor had registered 2.9 on the Richter scale - below the level where damage would be expected.

People from Loughborough and across parts of Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire have reported feeling it. Tweeting minutes after the event, Dr Simon Gosling @simon_gosling said:

  • "Did anyone else feel their house shake at 05:20 today in #Loughborough area? Earthquake, explosion, or something?"
However not everyone was affected. @KindredSole tweeted:

  • "Earthquake in Leicestershire?! Did the ground move for you??! We slept through it. Whoops!"
As news of the tremor spread - alongside a sprinkling of fresh snow - Loughborough students hoping for a day off were disappointed. @lborouniversity has tweeted:
