MP to hear mother's safety plea
A petition signed by hundreds of people demanding more safety measures outside a school will be handed to a city MP today.
Sammi Deacon, whose six-year-old daughter, Bryoni, attends Whitehall Primary, in Evington, set up the petition, which has more than 650 signatures.

She claims inconsiderate parents are parking on grass verges and on the corners of nearby roads when they drop off and pick up their children.
She is urging Leicester City Council to install bollards to prevent inconsiderate parking and has demanded a 20mph zone be set up outside the school.

She is also asking parents to think about their actions before a serious accident happens.
Sammi, who lives in St Deny's Road, in Evington, said: "I used to walk my daughter to Whitehall but have recently been diagnosed with ME which means I'm finding it more of a struggle.
"I've started driving close by and parking in Angela Drive so I can walk the remaining distance. I do this considerately, but it's made me notice just how many others don't.
"It can be absolute chaos – especially towards the end of school when parents seem to park just anywhere while they wait to pick up their children.
"There are several grass verges which become illegal car parking spaces.
"People can't see to cross the road because there are also cars parked at the very corners and others have no regard for blocking people's driveways.
"I'm worried an accident will happen one day and I want more measures put in to make sure this doesn't happen."
She said signs about restricted parking outside the school were being ignored and needed to be made larger.
"There used to be a traffic warden there for a period of time at the end of school which helped, but that's not happening any more."
Head teacher Anna Boychuk said: "I welcome this petition because I'd like to see extra measures put in place before an accident happens.
"We're constantly reminding parents of their responsibilities and I believe it's only a handful who create problems for others by parking on double yellow or zig-zag lines. The sooner we put up bollards and other restrictions, the better."
Leicester East MP Mr Vaz was due to pick up the petition, which has been signed by parents, teachers, and residents, at the school today, along with Evington councillor Deepak Bajaj.
Mr Vaz said: "I share my residents' concerns about road safety outside Whitehall Primary School.
"It's essential we ensure our children can safely travel to and from school.
"I will urgently write to Leicester City Council and ask them to review the road layout on Whitehall Road."
Mr Bajaj said: "I raised this issue with the city mayor last year and I know my comments have been taken on board.
"This petition adds weight to the argument that more could be done – particularly enforcing a 20mph zone, along with some extra safety measures. It's my hope that this will be incorporated into the council's plan in due course."

“These issues were raised about parking, driving outside Linden Primary School in Evington almost a year ago when a young pupil was run over by a bus, petition raised and submitted, meetings held etc, and yet NONE of Leicester City Council's promises to improve the markings and signage of the road have been carried out...”
