Traffic was backed up to the Red Hill island as motorists dashed to the garage in the hope of being among the first 106 drivers to arrive. The lucky few were able to fill up to a maximum of 45 litres at the discount price. The 107th motorist, however, who spent about an hour queuing, had to pay the normal 137.9p for petrol or 144.9p for diesel.
Petrol station staff member Ken Sangani said: "It was a mad rush, for over an hour.

"The 107th person and those beyond were disappointed and we still had people coming in for a while afterwards because it was all over social media."
A Gem 106 spokesman said: "Petrol prices are so high and we wanted to do something to help listeners. We only wish we could roll back the price of petrol every day. There will be more activity next week to help with fuel bills."
