He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mr Watling, a laboratory technician at Boots in Nottingham, had been celebrating Christmas with colleagues.
When he missed the last direct bus, he caught another service which dropped him off two miles from home and ended up walking the last part of his journey along the A606 Nottingham Road.
The accident happened south of Nether Broughton at about 8pm on Friday.
His brother, Colm Watling, of Elmhurst Avenue, Melton, said: "It's been a huge shock.
"He was a quiet lad who could always find a positive in any situation. One of my concerns is for the drivers of the two vehicles. It sounds like it was a tragic accident."
Police are investigating the incident, which involved a blue Citroen Xsara XS and a yellow ERF lorry.
Mr Watling, who was single, was a senior member of the Leicestershire group of the British Chinese Kickboxing Association, and trained several times a week.
He helped train youngsters in the junior section at its training sessions.
His brother added: "He was a well-liked and respected senior member of the Leicestershire kickboxing association.
"He moved to Melton from Derby about three years ago and since moving here he had made some fantastic friends, who have been incredibly supportive these last few days."
Brent Penniston, chief instructor of the Leicestershire British Chinese Kickboxing Association, said: "Ollan trained religiously three times a week in the senior grade.
"He helped train younger members and helped me with the kids' classes.
"The news of his death has been a big shock to everybody. He was a quiet lad who kept himself to himself and would always help anyone.
"He was a bit of a joker and you could have a bit of fun with him. No-one can believe what's happened. It's an awful thing."
Detective Constable Patricia Draycott, the officer investigating the incident, said: "Mr Watling and the two vehicles were all travelling towards Ab Kettleby when the collision happened.
"We would like anyone who witnessed the collision, or the events leading up to it to contact us."
