"The rest of the gun was wrapped in a glove.

"I immediately called the police because I feared it could have been used in a crime or was about to be."

Police arrived shortly afterwards and recovered a toy gun, a glove and a balaclava from the bag.

Firearms officers arrived and confirmed it was a toy and they took it away for forensic tests.

A police spokeswoman said they received a call at 10.10am about the dumping of an imitation gun.

She said the contents were being examined and that inquiries were continuing.
