Meerkats and other animals get their first taste of snow
SOME of the younger animals at Twycross Zoo have been experiencing their first taste of snow this week.
Team Leader, Julian Chapman said: "Since we don't get a lot of snow in this country, this is the first time some of our younger animals have ever seen snow.
"The toddlers in our troop of bonobos had a fantastic time rolling and tumbling in the snow, and our baby tapir was out running around her paddock first thing in the morning. Our chimpanzees were taking snow indoors to play with and investigate.
"Snow leopards, Irma and Suou, didn't seem as mystified by the snowfall as some of our other animals. Suou spent an afternoon snoozing on a rock, whilst Irma put on a superb display leaping around the enclosure chasing snowflakes.

"All of our animals have heated indoor enclosures, so they can choose to go outside in the snow if they want to and then retreat into somewhere warm and dry. Most of our enclosures also have indoor and outdoor viewing areas, so regardless of the weather the animals are on view."
Twycross Zoo is home to almost 1,000 animals of 168 species, 30 of which are classified endangered or critically endangered in the wild.
A new exhibition is also opening in March, dinosaur valley will see 15 live-size, animated dinosaur models give visitors a real taste of prehistoric times. Check out the Dinosaur Valley website for more details www.dinosaurvalley.co.uk
