Dozens of former Leicester Mercury staff swapped old stories – and Christmas cards – at an annual festive lunch.

The Leicester Mercury Pensioner's Lunch was held at the Mercure Leicester City Hotel, in Granby Street, yesterday.

Former photographic and sales assistant Sally Illston, who worked at the paper for 16 years before retiring in 2006, was among 80 former employees at the event.

"It really is lovely to catch up with people and have a chat – many of them you just don't see apart from at these lunches," said the 71-year-old, from Market Bosworth. "You get to hear people's news from year to year and it is nice to have a catch-up with a nice lunch.

"I used to work in photographic with some of the current photographers, helping out in the darkroom – first with black and white photographs and then colour. Of course things have changed now."

After a drinks reception, the former snappers, reporters, advertising staff and their colleagues were introduced to a number of current Mercury employees. After lunch, editor Richard Bettsworth gave a talk about the future of the paper.
