Mr and Mrs Vaz donate bench to school
MP Keith Vaz and his wife Maria have presented a bench to a primary school in memory of their stillborn daughter.
The Leicester East MP visited Whitehall Primary, in Evington, to hand over the bench which has been put in the playground's quiet garden.
Sahara, the first child of Mr and Mrs Vaz, would have turned 18 in October.
Mr Vaz decided to donate the bench to the school because his mother Merlyn was a teacher there.

He said: "Whitehall Primary is a very special school for our family.
"This is where my mother taught when Sahara was born. She loved reading to the kids.
"The head teacher has put the bench in their quiet area and I know it will be of great use.
"I hope they enjoy it.
"Stillbirths are a mystery and I hope in due course medical science will find the cause.
"Our sympathy is with all other parents who have been through the same experience and still miss their children."
All the costs were met by Mr and Mrs Vaz who have two other children, Luke, 17, and Anjali, 15.
Mr Vaz gave pupils a quiz on current affairs.

“A lot of ordinarily people donate much more for various reasons...... is this newsworthy?
I worry about the psyche of those who need to advertise their generosity.”

“Usually I don't like multiple posts but in this case I will add one more thing. I stated earlier that Mr Vaz is in a hole image-wise. Well, as the old saying goes;
'The best thing to do when you in a hole is – stop digging!'
Mr Vaz should stop all the negative pronouncements and get on with his job as an MP truly representing the people of Leicester. He could do this by engaging with the city meaningfully (and if at all possible - quietly and effectively!)
Talk to and encourage your constituents about what Midlands Leicester is all about. Seek out and support local initiatives and innovation. Ensure that the conditions are right to keep major industries in the area. Promote that in Parliament. Do it quietly and effectively and stop tapping into 'victim culture'.
If you work quietly, earnestly, effectively and positively to maintain enterprise and economic development in Leicester your standing with the citizenry might just improve.
(PS - Every parent will understand that the loss of a child is a very private grief and every parent will deal with it in their own way.)”

“The man's a 'ham' and at the moment he will do anything for a bit of good publicity. The fact is he is in a hole with the people of Leicester image-wise, over his recent pronouncements, and will try anything to try and rehabilitate himself. Why wasn't all this done on the anniversary of the tragedy in October? Why now?
And 'what-the-heck' was the relevance to the occasion of giving little children "a quiz on current affairs"?
I'm embarrassed that the Leicester Mercury goes along with this tosh!”

“Losing a child is terrible
Seeking to commerate it through a personal donation is fine
Getting the Mercury in to photograph it shows Vaz for what he is”

“rhino, the following is a quote from the article:
"All the costs were met by Mr and Mrs Vaz "
Perhaps a child might help you understand it and explain WHOS is not a word at the same time. Look beyond your blinkered bias before posting”

“If this was bought by the Vaz's using their own money then it is a very generous gift by them. If it was bought using public money (i.e parliamentary expenses) then I have completely different views on the subject.”

“Agree annoying9. Making such comments on this story is tasteless, crass and offensive.
I hope Mr & Mrs Vaz gained some solace from this act of remembrance.”
