Superintendent Craig Moore, who is leading the investigation, has issued an appeal to find witnesses who may have seen Mr Sheikh.

He added: "The victim was wearing a black baseball cap, black bomber jacket and dark tracksuit bottoms at the time of the incident, I would appeal to anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident and saw the victim prior to the incident taking place to contact the police.

"The Grove Road area is quite busy, particularly around the time of the incident and I am urging members of the community to come forward with any information they believe may assist with our enquiries. We can assure you that any information we receive will be treated in the strictest of confidence.

"Did you witness the incident or do you know who may be responsible, even the smallest of details could help with our investigation."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the incident room on 0116 222 2222. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers, which is free and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.
