Folk pioneer Eliza Carthy is in Loughborough on Tuesday, performing a selection of forgotten songs from Britain's industrial workplaces.

The rediscovery of the songs is partly the work of Loughborough University professor Marek Korczynski, so it is entirely fitting Carthy will showcase the songs in the town.

The event is being staged in the Martin Hall Theatre at the university and it is a real coup to attract someone of Carthy's prominence to be involved in the project.

The songs, some dating back 150 years, were rediscovered by Marek, his Loughborough colleague Mike Pickering and Emma Robertson, from Sheffield Hallam University.

The songs would at one time have been sung in the factories, fields and shipyards of Britain.

But they were forgotten or neglected as working practices changed in the mid-20th century.

The songs were rediscovered in the course of the group's three-year research into the social history of music in the workplace.

Before the performance, Marek will give an introductory talk about the songs and their role in social and workplace history.

INFO: WorkSongs will be performed in Martin Hall Theatre, Loughborough University, on Tuesday.
