Muslims will gather tonight in peaceful protest over an American pastor's plans to burn copies of the Qu'ran.

The gathering at Central Mosque in Sutherland Street, Leicester, will be for Muslims to observe the sanctity of their holy book.

Pastor Terry Jones announced yesterday he had postponed the burning, planned for today to mark the anniversary of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, in 2001.

Pastor Jones said the Qu'ran burning was a protest against the proposal to build a mosque near Ground Zero – where the Twin Towers stood.

Dr Habib Akram, Leicester president of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community UK, welcomed the postponement but said the pastor was wrong to hold the New York mosque plans to ransom.

He said: "Burning any religious scripture is contrary to the teachings of all the world's major religions.

"These few unfortunate Christians planning this ghastly act need to ask themselves whether they truly belong to Jesus, for he was a prophet of peace.

"We appeal to this church to abandon this provocative act that will offend billions of people of all faiths around the world.

"If anything, 9/11 should be a time for all of us to reaffirm our commitment to peace and not to create new conflicts."

Yesterday, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association in Leicester received a copy of the Bible from the Rev Professor Richard Bonney, a former professor of history at the University of Leicester and author of a number of books on contemporary Islamic issues.

A copy of the Qu'ran was presented to Professor Bonney, who said: "I utterly condemn the attitude of a small Christian sect. Their attitude is both disgraceful and un-Christian."

Suleman Nagdi, of the Federation of Muslim Organisations, said: "I urge Muslims to show their disapproval through peaceful means."

“The problem seems to boil down to either wilful or ignorant generalisation; whether it is Muslims taking this small time pastor as representative of all Christians in the US OR those here that seek to suggest that Islamic terrorists are representative of all Muslims. Obviously neither is true.

What made the US and the UK better than the Islamic terrorist's objectives was that we had a society where people with different religious beliefs, or none at all could live and work side by side, could tolerate and respect each other. Religious fanatics scare me, whether they are young Muslim men that think flying a plane into a building means they will go to heaven and enjoy the company of compliant virgins, or Christians that are pre-occupied with "end times prophecy" (just google it) and cant wait for the world to be destroyed by god so that they can go to heaven ...

What we dont want is these nutters dictating policy, trying to turn ordinary non-extreme Muslims and Christians against each other; in reality they probably have more in common with each other than different.”

“Just to be clear, the comment below wasn't directed at the Ahmadiyya muslim community UK sect of islam but at all the other muslims across the world (as seen on the news).Although, with the permissible act of taquiyya within islam one can never be sure.”

“In my "niaivity and Ignorance" I firmly believe that no written book is worth the life of a human being, I admit I am not religous myself but in this day and age who can justify such actions? I am surprised with certain peoples intolerence, get over it. Its just a book wether you belive whats in it or not and are you so convinced that every thing written to true? To save lifes the goverment is trying to ban smoking, perhaps ther should follow this cause of action and look at banning such extrimist groups and views I wonder how many lives could have been saved?”

“A bit of perspective may be required perhaps by those offended by this pastor in America. He has very little credibility with any sane person and should really have been ignored by all concerned. However, an over reaction by the press ( who should take more responsibiity for the coverage they give this kind of story) and in turn the muslim communities round the world has escalated this story beyond compare.”

“I sometimes wonder whether religious practice is really a mild form of mental illness? Watching this loony Florida preacher and the crazed reaction of some Muslims, I can only shake my head in disbelief. As the crazies would say God help us.........”

“I suspect if some crazy suggested buring copies of the Torah in Jeruselem the Israeli state would come down on them like a ton of bricks.Would those on this thread who have accused other communities of intolerence also believe that in a region where Jew and Muslim are both present that this would also show intolerance? Whose tolerance do you really support?”

“Tony Church, '....makes the world a lot more dangerous for you and me.'

Indeed whether it is another muslim, Salman Rushdie who writes a book, or a Danish cartoonist, or a war in Bosnia,
Is it that one particular community is over-sensitive or just intolerant?”

“Daniel (a good Old Testament name) you miss the point; either deliberately or accidentally. The actions of this 'radical Christian' nutter makes the world a lot more dangerous for you and me. Still if you can't see this, you're actually not worth arguing with.”
