Leicester West MP Liz Kendall today sends out a rallying cry to city and county businesses – we need you.

Her call comes as the Leicester Mercury and Leicester College redouble their efforts to provide 100 apprenticeships in 100 days.

Ms Kendall said: "I'm urging businesses to seize the chance apprenticeships provide to help them grow and succeed.

"The businesses I've spoken to say apprenticeships are a brilliant way to create the workforce they need. "They provide on the job training so companies get the practical skills as well as knowledge that make a difference to 'the bottom line'.

"I think apprenticeships are vital to the success of businesses and our economy as a whole. That's why I'm championing the Leicester Mercury's campaign for 100 apprenticeships in 100 days.

"We need you – business leaders of Leicester and Leicestershire to get behind this and take on an apprentice."

The Mercury and Leicester College want to hear from people aged 16 to 65 who are looking for valuable work experience and from companies that can offer an apprenticeship.

So far, more than 900 enthusiastic would-be apprentices have come forward, along with 39 companies since the challenge was launched a month ago.

But more firms are needed to take on potential apprentices.

Ms Kendall's call comes as National Apprenticeship Week gets underway.

The Labour MP will be at Leicester College to talk to potential apprentices this week.

Businesses would be supported through the entire process by Leicester College staff.

Martin Traynor, managing director of Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce, said there was no better time to take on an apprentice.

"In the last two quarters of 2010, the Leicester and Leicestershire economy really started to recover, led primarily by the very strong performance of our manufacturing sector," he said.

"As the recovery continues, the old spectre of skills shortages has again raised its head. "Therefore, now more than ever, companies must invest in developing their workforce. Taking apprentices on has to be a part of the solution."

Leicester College said the campaign has got off to a flying start but there's more to do.

Keith Whittaker, deputy principal at Leicester College, said: "The Apprenticeship Challenge is an amazing opportunity for employers. We need businesses to step up and lend us their support."

Business Secretary Vince Cable today marked the start of National Apprenticeship Week by underlining the Government's commitment to increase the budget for apprenticeships to over £1,400 million in 2011-12.

Dr Cable said investment in training the next generation of highly skilled workers would be key to sustainable economic growth.

How to get involved

Firms that come forward will be supported by Leicester College throughout the process.

“This is just a big marketing campaign for Leicester College. My son registered an interest through the Leicester Mercury which feeds directly to Leicester College's site. He has heard nothing, not even an aknowledgement.”

“it's a lttle too late, we haven't got any industry left, as for apprentices why employ youngsters on a apprenticeship when you can get it for nothing, from the job centres who send youngsters to work in local businesses and they don't have to pay a penny, have you looked on the job sections there was 15 jobs advertised and most of them were part time”

    “@Matt,

Of course Mrs K hasn't been slipping something into my tea. That would mean she cares (one way or the other). That would never do!!! :)”

“What with Liz Kendall and a plethora of Labour lord mayor candidates, the Merc does appear to be taking on the role of left wing propaganda rag at present!!....just need the council to move into the Merc building....oh, they might be ;-)”

“She could have done with studying the original Kitchener artwork a little closer in order to execute the perfect 'parody' oh, and stuck on a false moustache but as for trying to appear 'with it' that IS an example of you seeing something that isn't there and regarding illegal substances, are you sure Mrs Kulgan hasn't been slipping something in your tea? ;)”

    “@Matt,

Sorry, I only see what is before me, not what I want to see. Unlike some people, I don't touch illegal substances.

If I had wanted to see something that wasn't there, It would be Amanda Tapping (SG1) ;)

If she had said "Your County needs you" etc etc then perhaps but the position of the thumb is somewhat incorrectly placed and the moustache is not a patch on Kitchener's.

As she said "take on an apprentice" I wondered if it was something to do with Jedi Training ;)”

“I agree Pam, why would businesses take note of what she has to say? Surely the Mercury should have tried to find someone with some relevance and a high profile in the business world who has a link to leicester...”

“I believe that if she was attempting to adopt a Vanilla Ice pose then her finger would be pointing downwards, she is actually pointing at the camera.

She is also quoted as saying "We need you - businesses etc etc" which kind of gives it away.

I guess you see what you want, I on the other hand as a neutral, am able to take a more balanced view or maybe its simply that I have better eyesight. :)”
