NHS a glorious part of our wonderful UK
I have always known the NHS is one of the glories of our country, and I worry very much at the Tories' attempts to dismantle and part privatise it.
The events of the past few weeks have reaffirmed my belief – and as I am a retired nurse I know what I am talking about.
In the early hours of January 7, I fell down the stairs at home and fractured (as was later found out) two vertebrae. I have nothing but praise and admiration for the way I was treated – the ambulance service, Casualty Department and ward 17 of the Leicester Royal Infirmary.
I was cared for throughout my nearly three weeks stay with professionalism, care and compassion from all staff – doctors, nurses, and all ancillaries. I am 79 and have so far been fortunate enough never to have needed hospital care and to have very seldom needed to go to the GP.

Not only were the nurses always there when I needed them, but the physiotherapists came several time after my stabilising operation to supervise my walking, the occupational therapists came to check I could wash myself properly and also visited my home to install some aids around the lavatories and basin, and I was astonished, a few days after my discharge, to be rung up by Social Services (who had been contacted by the LRI) to see if I needed help washing and dressing.
Since my discharge, I have been moved to tears at times by the help and care from friends and neighbours in Croft – walking the dog, leaving cards, offering to shop and so forth. I now need to work at regaining my fitness. This is a wonderful country in which to live.
