Thousands of people oppose plan for 350 homes near Leicestershire village
More than 2,500 people are fighting plans which they fear could see hundreds of homes built near their village.
Leicestershire County Council has applied for permission to build 350 houses off Hospital Lane and Bouskell Park, Blaby.

Opponents said the homes would swallow up 30 of the 57 acres of green space in the district. They have formed action group Land for Life and gathered 2,500 signatures of people who oppose the plans.
Simon Edwards, chairman of the group, said: "Nobody apart from the council wants this development. We have heard the council is selling the land because is needs the money.
"That is not a good enough reason to build a housing estate and to take away what is an important site for people and wildlife. The schools round here are excellent but they are already full.
"Where are all the extra children going to go to school?"
The land, currently fields, is owned by Leicestershire County Council, which is to submit an outline planning application to Blaby District Council.
If this is approved, the land would be sold to a developer with the money going into county services.
Under the last Government, Blaby District Council was required to build 7,600 homes across the district.
The coalition Government has said it wanted councils to decide how many houses should be built and where.
A county council spokesman said: "We will continue to work with Blaby District Council on proposals for the Hospital Lane site to support future housing targets.
"When those proposals have been finalised, we will submit a planning application. No date has yet been agreed for such a submission."
The application contains plans for improved footpaths, cycleways and bridleways and improved access to Thistly Meadow Primary School.
A spokesman for Blaby District Council said it could not comment as the application had not yet been submitted.
Blaby resident Laura Hastings said: "We don't need any more houses here. There are empty properties in this locality that are sitting unsold.
"I find it unbelievable that the council is encouraging us all to get fit and active but is proposing to take away a place where we can walk and cycle safely."
Rachel North said: "This is the only decent green space for miles around and it's very popular with walkers, cyclists and horse riders.
"My children love to watch the wildlife here – it's right on the doorstep and means they're not sat at home playing computer games."
Andrew Robathan, MP for Leicestershire South, said: "I don't expect that the whole area will remain as farmland forever but I do hope that any development is sympathetic to the residents' concerns."
Residents are being urged to write to Blaby District Council.

“A lot of people have argued that this is just NIMBY opposition to a much needed housing project.
Yes, we need houses, but we also do have areas of undeveloped land within the city boundaries that could equally be used. This site is more than just Green Field; in all senses. It's a beautiful tranquil area of uncultivated, unpampered nature on the edge of the city. My son and I regularly walk and cycle through here to get away from the city for a while. To have this taken away from us and the hundreds of people who use this area to relax, walk their dogs and birdwatching would be truly tragic. Once the land is lost it can never be reclaimed, so I urge you all to support the campaign to save this little corner of England from the desperation of the council and developers.”

“I'm always amazed by the ignorance and poverty of replies such as Dave, David, etc.
'don't like it - move'
'selfish gits'
'just another load of NIMBY's'
I can understand that people don't agree, but to give as their only argument that the others are 'stupid' and 'so what' it's always been like that is to ignore how, thankfully, great debate, discussion and a willingness to see the larger picture has enabled our societies to develop.
P.S. What are NIMBY's? I've been out of the country for too long to know - or maybe I'll get the easy answer back that as I don't live here I should shut up?

“As a Blaby resident, i am not against development, but we need appropriate development to the needs of the community. Development of this kind is not about considering the community, but making money.
I would like to see the council be a little more creative and capitalise on the huge number of people who visit this area daily from across Leicester and Leicestershire.
We have several large brownfield sites, like the old GEC land which is a monstrocity and has been left derelict and unsold for so many years now, why not build here???
We need to recognise how important are green spaces are to us and our wildlife and protect them for our future and that of our children. I use this area every day with my family and its loss would be tragic to the area.
I would ask Dave, David, Andrew and Daniel to come and view the land, how its used on mass by so many and its wildlife, tree and plant species, including its woods and then take a look at all the unsold new homes in Blaby that were unsold even in the housing boom and then give a good reason for calling concerned residents Nimbys. Be warned though you may be queing if you drive, because the rd Congestion around here is terrible at most times of the day and it still does not include the extra traffic created from the huge unwanted housing development in Countesthorpe, being built on their green fields, that has been confirmed WILL have a big effect on Blaby and also the proposed housing developments in Narborough, Whetstone, Littlethorpe and another in Countesthorpe.
These villages were never designed to house so many, why dont we start looking at our brownfield sites which their are so many of.
Its about time our councils actually started listening to the communitys who will have to live with there money driven plans, the people they are supposed to represent!.”

“I hate how these articles always take the side of the NIMBYs, as if they're some sort of tragic victims, rather than a bunch of selfish gits. What on earth do these people think their own homes were built on in the first place? Yep, fields and green spaces! If they think empty fields are so wonderful, why not petition to have their own houses demolished and replaced with a nature reserve?”

“How many people in Blaby live in houses where there were fields twenty or thirty years ago? Plenty of green spaces left, including a large park just a few minutes walk from this proposed development.”
