Melton Mowbray's Regal Cinema - which closed at the end of June - is expected to reopen again as a cinema, following news that the letting agents have agreed a deal with a new commercial operator. The signs outside now read 'LET subject to contract' although the agents are unable to confirm the identity of the new tenants, until all paperwork is completed.

Following the closure, local resident Sue Bailey launched the 'Save Regal Melton' campaign, and at a public meeting last month, around 100 people backed their plans to form a social enterprise to bid to run the cinema. However following news of the letting, the steering group updated their 'Save Regal Melton' Facebook group to say:

  1. LET - Melton Mowbray's Regal Cinema will soon have new operators

  • "Our plans for a Community Interest Company have been put on hold, although if for any reason the deal falls through, we would be ready to move forward again."

"When we began this process, our primary desire was to see The Regal Cinema re-open and we are all delighted that this looks likely to happen again soon."

"We want to say a huge 'thank you' to the 100's of people from Melton and beyond who have supported us over the past few months - indeed the support from the local community may have encouraged other operators to come forward."

Looking to the future, Sue Bailey added:

  • "We are hoping to talk with the new owners when they take over about some of the ideas we had and see if they are feasible."

"I know that we all look forward to the next film - so see you there!"

Mark Twittey from the Save Regal Melton steering group also spoke to BBC Radio Leicester to update their listeners. You can listen again on BBC iPlayer until Monday 24 September 2012. The 4 minute interview starts just after 2 hours 17 minutes of the show.

“Excellent. I love old independent cinemas, just wish I lived a little closer to Melton.”
