New year, new life - Leicestershire's hospitals welcome New Year babies
Baby Thomas Johnson could not wait until his mum got to hospital so his dad Darren helped deliver him at home in the early hours of New Year's Day.
Mum Marie Garside, 31, and Thomas were recovering at Leicester Royal Infirmary yesterday after the excitement of her 5.15am home birth.
Marie, of New Parks, Leicester, said: "I felt the urge to push and I was in so much pain I couldn't go anywhere.
"Thankfully, Darren was fairly calm and he called an ambulance.

"They were talking him through what to do and before we knew it, Thomas had arrived.
"I think it's really special to arrive on New Year's Day. It's quite a novelty."
Darren, 38, said: "I could see his head so I knew we couldn't go anywhere, but it was a relief when the ambulance crew turned up.
"Now we have another beautiful son."
Marie's mum, Sandra, was also on hand to help with the birth of 6lb 10z Thomas, as well as look after his three-year-old brother, Alfie.
At Leicester Royal Infirmary, Joanna Kot, from Aylestone, in the city, was in labour as the clock struck midnight.
She finally gave birth to Tymoteusz Walega at 1.49am. He weighed just over 7lb.
Dad Lukasz, 31, said: "We didn't know if he was going to be a boy or a girl, so it was a great surprise.
"We're just really happy that he's healthy and everything is okay."
Student Tatiana Vano Oniscenkova, from Braunstone, gave birth to 6lb 12oz Anushka at 2.12am.
She said: "She is beautiful. I can't wait to take her home."
Salma Khatun's son Zain Rashid arrived at 3.29am. He was two weeks earlier than planned and weighed just 4lb 5oz.
Salma, 23, from Loughborough, said: "I prayed for him to arrive on New Year's Day because I thought that would be really special and my prayers were answered.
"No one will forget his birthday now."
Leanna Bainbridge, 24, and Lloyd Matthews, 44, celebrated the birth of their son Harry Matthews at 8.17am.
Lloyd said: "It was fantastic to see him come into the world."
At Leicester General Hospital, Baljit Kooner, 31, from Syston, gave birth to a boy, yet to be named, weighing just under 6lb, at 3.45am.
She said: "I'm really happy. He's my first child and he was born two weeks early.
"I'm so pleased that he was born on New Year's Day. It just makes it extra special."
At St Mary's Birth Centre, in Melton, Victoria Charlesworth, 31, from Groby, gave birth to a son at 9.22am, after opting to use its water birth facilities.
The boy weighed 6lb, 9oz when he arrived. He was also yet to be named.
